HD Hyundai Heavy Industries

Korean shipbuilding stocks turned higher on Wednesday as tensions between the United States and Iran eased. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180.KS) and Hanwha Ocean (042660.KS), both ranked among the top KOSPI stocks by market capitalization, climbed 9% and 8%, respectively. With new shipbuilding orders surpassing 1,000 vessels this year and growing expectations for the application of shipbuilding technology to data center businesses, analysts say valuation momentum for the shipbuilding industry is strengthening.

According to the Korea Exchange on the 26th, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries was trading at 744,000 won, up 64,000 won or 9.41% from the previous session. Within the HD Hyundai Group, the gain was more pronounced than HD Hyundai Marine Solution (3.87%), HD Hyundai (2.13%), HD Hyundai Marine Engine (-0.99%) and HD Hyundai Electric (-1.96%). Hanwha Ocean was trading at 133,500 won, up 11,300 won or 9.25% from the previous close.

Shipbuilding stocks broadly showed strength. Sejin Heavy Industries (3.51%), Sam Young M-Tek (2.88%), Samsung Heavy Industries (2.03%), Hyundai Hims (0.62%) and Daehan Shipbuilding (0.43%) were all changing hands at higher prices than the previous session. The rally is attributed to foreign news reports during the holiday that the United States and Iran were discussing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to extend the ceasefire by 60 days, which gave momentum to shipbuilding shares.

Brokerages have also released a series of reports presenting a favorable outlook for the shipbuilding industry, led by the fact that new shipbuilding orders have surpassed 1,000 vessels this year. Um Kyung-ah, an analyst at Shinyoung Securities, said in a report Wednesday, “The new shipbuilding price index rose 0.3 points from the previous week to 184.94,” adding that “cumulative orders reached 1,024 vessels, compared with 483 vessels during the same period in 2025.”

Expectations are also growing for the application of shipbuilding technology to data center businesses. Han Young-soo, a team leader at Samsung Securities, noted in a report Wednesday, “HD Hyundai Group has actually signed a contract to supply power generation equipment based on its HiMSEN engine to a US energy infrastructure company, and the engine is reportedly to be used for data center power infrastructure.” He added, “As the pace of power infrastructure supply is expected to accelerate, business opportunities for shipbuilders related to data centers are expected to expand going forward.”

Jupjup Report

A rendering of South Korea’s next-generation destroyer (KDDX) proposed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
