{"id":31720,"date":"2026-05-27T10:33:04","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T10:33:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/31720\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T10:33:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T10:33:04","slug":"south-korean-government-to-summon-iran-ambassador-over-ship-attack-in-strait-of-hormuz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/31720\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korean government to summon Iran ambassador over ship attack in Strait of Hormuz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seoul said Wednesday it would summon Iran&#8217;s ambassador to protest after a probe concluded that a strike on a South Korean ship in the Strait of Hormuz was &#8220;highly likely&#8221; an Iranian-made missile.<\/p>\n<p>The South Korean cargo ship was hit by unidentified aircraft on May 4 in the strait, a key waterway virtually closed since the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump claimed Iran had &#8220;taken some shots&#8221; at the Panama-flagged vessel while Tehran had denied responsibility for the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Following a weeks-long investigation, the South Korean government said technical analysis concluded that the unidentified projectile that struck the vessel was &#8220;highly likely&#8221; an alternative version of the &#8220;Noor series developed in Iran&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our government plans to summon the Iranian ambassador to explain the investigation results, convey a strong protest regarding the attack on our vessel, and demand responsible measures, including steps to prevent a recurrence,&#8221; first vice foreign minister Park Yoon-joo said during a briefing.<\/p>\n<p>Park said the HMM Namu was attacked by two unidentified aircraft, adding the first warhead was incinerated while the second detonated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The engine resembled an Iranian turbojet engine, and parts were found to bear markings presumed to be from an Iranian manufacturer,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The damage to the ship, which had 24 crew members on board, spanned about &#8220;five metres (16.5 feet) wide and extended roughly seven metres (23 feet) into the hull&#8221; on the port-side stern, according to the South Korean government.<\/p>\n<p>The first strike is believed to have ignited an engine room fire, with the second appearing to have caused the blaze to spread rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>A photo released by the foreign ministry shows the ship&#8217;s engine room heavily burned.<\/p>\n<p>Another photo shows a large breach in the outer hull near the stern, with twisted metal and internal frames visible around the impact area.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea, Asia&#8217;s fourth-largest economy, relies heavily on Middle Eastern fuel imports, most of which transited through the Strait of Hormuz before it was effectively closed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Seoul said Wednesday it would summon Iran&#8217;s ambassador to protest after a probe concluded that a strike on&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":31721,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[171,9373,6988,116],"class_list":["post-31720","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-korea","tag-korean","tag-ship-attack","tag-south-korean-government","tag-strait-of-hormuz"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31720","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=31720"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31720\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/31721"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=31720"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=31720"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=31720"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
