Hyundai Engineering has broken ground on a 200-megawatt solar power plant in Texas, marking its full-scale leap into becoming a specialized energy developer beyond engineering, procurement and construction (EPC).<\/p>\n

Hyundai Engineering said Friday it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Hillsboro Solar Power Plant in Hill County, Texas, and has begun full-scale construction. The project is the company’s first overseas renewable energy investment and development project for which it has directly managed the entire process \u2014 from project rights acquisition in 2024 through permitting, power purchase agreement (PPA) and project financing (PF) procurement.<\/p>\n

The financing scale is substantial. Last month, Hyundai Engineering secured a financing agreement worth approximately $310 million (about 460 billion won) with four domestic and international financial institutions, including the Korea Development Bank. The plant is targeted for completion and commercial operation in December 2027 and will produce approximately 476 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually.<\/p>\n

The electricity generated will be supplied through power purchase agreements to major Hyundai Motor Group sites in North America, including Hyundai Motor’s Alabama plant, Kia’s Georgia plant and Mobis Alabama. The project serves as a strategic initiative supporting the group’s RE100 commitment.<\/p>\n

Beginning with this groundbreaking, Hyundai Engineering is expanding its business across the entire energy value chain. Domestically, it has completed the Saemangeum solar power project (2021) and built solar facilities at group affiliate sites. Overseas, it was selected as a strategic partner for a 1-gigawatt solar project in Serbia (2024), establishing a foothold for European expansion. In the nuclear and hydrogen sectors, it is concurrently participating in the design of a research reactor at the University of Missouri in the United States and building a water electrolysis-based hydrogen production facility in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province.<\/p>\n
