THE Department of Education (DepEd) highlighted the personal and professional growth experienced by Filipino educators through the Korea-Philippines Teacher Exchange Program (KPTEP), underscoring how international exposure directly translates to grassroots educational innovation.<\/p>\n

The bilateral initiative, operated jointly by DepEd and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Center\u00a0of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), has been driving cross-border innovation since its inception in 2012.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\n EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION The Department of Education and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding has been driving cross-border innovation since its inception in 2012. DEPED PHOTO\n <\/p>\n

It aims to build inter-cultural communicative competency, deepen mutual understanding, and strengthen educational networks between both nations.<\/p>\n

Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that empowering teachers through these cultural synergies aligns with the administration\u2019s broader vision for national development.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Bongbong Marcos has always prioritized the global competitiveness of our labor force, and empowering our teachers is the first step toward achieving that goal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough international cooperation programs like this, we are able to equip our instructional leaders with world-class competencies that directly benefit our learners,\u201d Angara added.<\/p>\n

The KPTEP has facilitated the exchange of around 330 educators to date, deploying some 190 Filipino teacher delegates to ROK and welcoming about 140 Korean teacher delegates to the Philippines.<\/p>\n

Among those whose career trajectories were transformed is Raleigh Ojanola, a Master Teacher 2 from Koronadal National Comprehensive Senior High School in Soccsksargen in Region 12.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Participating in the exchange last year, Ojanola found himself serving as a cultural ambassador as he represented Mindanao’s diverse Christian, Muslim and indigenous cultures while immersing himself in Korean traditions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The experience opened a lot of realizations. The more I witnessed the Korean educational system, the more I realized that I need to go back to serve my community and to continue to enlighten our learners so that they too can become successful,”\u00a0Ojanola remarked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ojanola channeled his global insights into Project Tulong Literacy para sa Akademikong Yaman or Tulay, a specialized reading intervention program he authored that integrates Global Citizenship Education (GCED) concepts into localized reading materials.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour experiences will broaden your perspective of the world and help you connect global understanding to your local community,\u201d Ojanola said, sharing a message for future cohorts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more we think global and the more we act locally, the more people will be encouraged and this will result in respect for diversity, respect for the environment, and respect for the people around us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The program\u2019s impact is mirrored in Metro Manila by Kristine Cruz, a Master Teacher 2 from Malabon National High School, who returned from her 2024 deployment with a renewed vision for her community.<\/p>\n

Grateful for what she described as a life-changing opportunity, Cruz emphasized that the experience fundamentally transformed her mindset, allowing her to expand her horizons, study international best practices, and develop a profound sense of mission.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have learned a lot of things, especially in the best practices of other countries like South Korea.\u00a0\u00a0And we’re able to apply those practices in our educational system to enhance and eventually help our system. We have this thinking now that we are not just Filipino teachers, we are global teachers,\u201d\u00a0Cruz shared.<\/p>\n

Cruz leveraged her international immersion to launch an annual school clubs festival aligned with themes of GCED and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

She also led an online cultural exchange class directly linking her Malabon students with her South Korean host school, Seoha Elementary School to instill the core values of respect for diversity, empathy and cultural understanding in her learners.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Highlighting the continuity of this global partnership, a fresh cohort of four Filipino teachers is currently deployed in South Korea as the 2026 batch of exchange participants, ready to bring world-class perspectives back to local communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
