Yonhap News

Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and SK hynix (000660.KS), which have driven the rally in Korea’s stock market, fell sharply, sending related single-stock leverage exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and exchange-traded notes (ETNs) down more than 10 percent. Individual investors who had recently bet on the rise in chip stocks were taking a direct hit.

According to the Korea Exchange, as of 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, Samsung Electronics was trading at 333,000 won, down 5.26 percent from the previous session, while SK hynix was at 2.127 million won, down 7.44 percent. The selloff concentrated on Korea’s large-cap chip stocks following the overnight plunge of major U.S. semiconductor stocks including Broadcom and Micron.

Losses were particularly steep among leverage products tied to SK hynix. The 1Q SK hynix Single-Stock Leverage fell 14.67 percent, and the KIWOOM SK hynix Futures Leverage dropped 14.93 percent. The Mirae Asset Leverage SK hynix Single-Stock ETN fell 15.05 percent, the SOL SK hynix Single-Stock Leverage 14.96 percent, the TIGER SK hynix Single-Stock Leverage 14.78 percent, the ACE SK hynix Single-Stock Leverage 14.95 percent, the KODEX SK hynix Single-Stock Leverage 14.77 percent, and the RISE SK hynix Single-Stock Leverage 14.51 percent.

Samsung Electronics leverage products also weakened across the board. The 1Q Samsung Electronics Futures Leverage fell 11.31 percent, and the KIWOOM Samsung Electronics Futures Single-Stock Leverage dropped 9.80 percent. The Mirae Asset Leverage Samsung Electronics ETN fell 10.13 percent, the TIGER Samsung Electronics Single-Stock Leverage 10.42 percent, the ACE Samsung Electronics Single-Stock Leverage 10.91 percent, the KODEX Samsung Electronics Single-Stock Leverage 10.49 percent, the PLUS Samsung Electronics Single-Stock Leverage 11.16 percent, and the RISE Samsung Electronics Single-Stock Leverage 10.34 percent.

The correction in chip stocks was largely driven by the U.S. market. The previous day, Broadcom plunged more than 12 percent after issuing guidance that fell short of market expectations, while Micron fell more than 7 percent. As a result, profit-taking spread across the global semiconductor sector, dampening investor sentiment.

Analysts view the decline as a breather following a short-term surge rather than a deterioration in industry conditions. However, with individual investors’ funds having recently flowed heavily into Samsung Electronics and SK hynix single-stock leverage products, some point out that losses on leverage products could widen further if volatility in the leading stocks increases.

“There is still room for further improvement in earnings momentum, and today’s sharp drop is creating valuation appeal for entering the KOSPI centered on semiconductors,” said Han Ji-young, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities. “We need to keep open the possibility that the pattern of narrowing intraday losses after a plunge could recur.”

The KOSPI and other figures are displayed on a board at Hana Bank’s dealing room in Jung-gu, Seoul,…

[20
24012,337,335,19769,276,279,11780,241,275
post-42572","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sk-hynix","tag-broadcom","tag-korea-exchange","tag-kospi","tag-leverage-etf","tag-samsung-electronics","tag-semiconductor-stocks","tag-single-stock-leverage","tag-sk","tag-sk-hynix
["GET
