Kakao’s (035720.KS) labor union launched its first partial strike since the company’s founding.<\/p>\n
The Kakao branch of the Korean Federation of Chemical, Textile and Food Workers’ Unions began a partial strike at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The partial strike runs for a total of four hours until 3 p.m., excluding a one-hour break. Union members plan to march around Kakao’s Pangyo Agit campus starting at 11:30 a.m. An estimated 600 union members are expected to participate in the rally.<\/p>\n
The strike involves five entities, including Kakao headquarters, KakaoPay, Kakao Enterprise, DKTechin, and XLGames. Kakao headquarters and its affiliates had disagreed with management in wage negotiations and underwent mediation by the Gyeonggi Regional Labor Relations Commission last month, but the talks broke down. A vote among union members also passed in favor, leading to the strike. This is the first time Kakao headquarters has carried out a strike.<\/p>\n
Kakao’s labor and management have failed to reach common ground over the performance bonus compensation structure. The two sides have differed over a plan to compensate 13 to 14 percent of last year’s operating profit as performance bonuses, as well as over whether to include 5 million won worth of restricted stock units (RSUs) in the bonuses. The union’s position is that RSUs should be excluded from bonus calculations, while management views this demand as a significant burden on operations.<\/p>\n
However, the strike is not expected to disrupt the operation of major services such as KakaoTalk and KakaoPay.
