Photo courtesy of Samsung Electronics<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) has secured the position of top shareholder in U.S. genomics company Element Biosciences, moving to lock up core technology for its entry into the global precision medicine market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Samsung Electronics said Monday it had executed an additional equity investment of $175 million (about 270 billion won) by participating in Element&#8217;s Series E funding round. Through this investment, following its participation in the Series D round in 2024, Samsung Electronics has become Element&#8217;s largest shareholder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Element is a genetic analysis equipment company founded in San Diego, U.S., in 2017. It developed &#8220;DNA sequencing&#8221; technology that raises the accuracy of genome analysis to an industry-leading 99.99% while dramatically reducing costs. The technology reads the base sequences of DNA, which contains an organism&#8217;s genetic information, and can be applied to predicting genetic diseases, early detection, follow-up monitoring, and the development of personalized treatments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Samsung Electronics plans in particular to actively use Element&#8217;s &#8220;multiomics&#8221; technology in its precision medicine business. Multiomics is a technology that integrates and analyzes various biological information, including not only DNA but also RNA and proteins. This can further accelerate research into diseases and treatments. Combined with Samsung Electronics&#8217; daily-life data such as users&#8217; sleep and exercise, personalized medical services are also expected to become possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">&#8220;By combining Samsung Electronics&#8217; expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), medical devices, and digital health with Element&#8217;s innovative genome analysis technology, we will create synergy for the future of personalized medicine,&#8221; said Roh Tae-moon, president of Samsung Electronics&#8217; Device eXperience (DX) division. &#8220;Under the goal of improving people&#8217;s health, we will continue to invest across a wide range of fields, from precision medical devices to digital health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">&#8220;Samsung Electronics&#8217; expanded investment demonstrates deep trust in Element&#8217;s vision, technological capabilities, and members,&#8221; said Molly He, CEO of Element. &#8220;Through this investment, we will continue to present innovative technologies that promote scientific discovery and advance human health.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A view of Samsung Electronics&#8217; Seocho office building.
