Two of the compact cars Americans are most familiar with \u2013 the Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic \u2013 both come in hybrid editions. But the two companies take different approaches to going hybrid, which makes deciding between the two slightly complicated.<\/p>\n

The\u00a02026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid<\/a> is a startlingly good value, with a starting price of just $26,695 (including delivery charges) and fuel economy of up to 54 mpg in combined driving. It carries the longest warranty in its class, protecting you from surprise expenses down the line as well. Its power numbers are modest on paper, but strong torque from the electric motor makes it feel more powerful than its specifications suggest.<\/p>\n Elantra Hybrid Highlights<\/p>\n Low starting price:\u00a0Hyundai offers the Elantra Hybrid in three trim levels, including an affordable base model, making it one of the most affordable cars in its class. Honda builds hybrid editions of only pricier Civic trims, so the least expensive Civic Hybrid starts at over $30,000.<\/p>\n Up to 54 mpg: Most automakers now build a hybrid version of their compact sedan (think Toyota Corolla, Civic, etc). Of those, the Elantra has the best fuel economy. Base Hybrid Blue models get up to 54 mpg in combined driving. More well-equipped higher trims get 50 mpg \u2013 still better than any Civic version.<\/p>\n It makes a game of efficiency:\u00a0The fuel economy numbers a car puts up in testing are one thing. Honda builds a hybrid version in the 2026 Civic Hybrid<\/a>. But the company takes a different approach than most rivals, building hybrid versions only of higher-end Civic trims. That makes the car look significantly more expensive. Apples to apples, the Civic Hybrid has more in common with an expensive, high-end trim of the Elantra Hybrid.<\/p>\n Civic Hybrid Highlights<\/p>\n Far more powerful:\u00a0At 200 horsepower, the Civic is more powerful than rivals from Hyundai or Toyota. The difference is a little misleading \u2013 the electric motors of both rivals provide enough low-end acceleration that they feel more alike than you might expect. But the Honda will pass on the highway with less use of the accelerator.<\/p>\n Available hatchback:\u00a0 Honda builds a hybrid version of its Civic hatchback.
