Seoul Economic Daily DB

LG Electronics (066570.KS) is building a “Robot Data Factory,” a dedicated learning space to advance the intelligence of humanoids, the first of its kind in Korea. Analysts say the company has launched large-scale infrastructure investment to seize leadership in the robot business, which it has identified as a key future growth driver.

According to industry sources Friday, LG Electronics is establishing a Robot Data Factory with a total floor area of 33,000 square meters (about 10,000 pyeong) at its Yangjae research and development (R&D) campus in Seocho-gu, Seoul. The facility will begin full operation as early as July, deploying the company’s humanoid robot “LG CLOiD.” The company plans to increase robot deployment to several hundred units within the year and invest hundreds of billions of won by 2030. The project is considered a core initiative within the group, with LG Electronics CEO Lyu Jae-cheol visiting the site weekly to personally oversee its progress.

The Data Factory is a kind of training center that produces and verifies the physical data robots need to move and perform tasks on their own. While generative artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT learns from text and images on the internet, humanoids require actual behavioral data, such as picking up and assembling objects in the real world. LG Electronics will recreate environments such as actual homes and home appliance production lines at the facility, even bringing in transport carts from its plant in Tennessee, United States, to collect practical data specialized for homes and factories.

The high-quality data secured this way will be used to advance the Robot Foundation Model (RFM), the robot’s AI brain. The plan is to overcome the limitations of existing humanoids, such as slow movements, through large-scale training, and dramatically accelerate market entry.

The global humanoid market is entering full bloom and is expected to grow rapidly to $37.8 billion (about 52 trillion won) by 2035. With global big tech firms such as Nvidia and Google entering the physical AI competition, LG Electronics has also designated this year as the first year of its full-scale robot business.

Following the mass production of actuators, a key component, in the first half of the year, the company’s strategy is to combine its software brain (RFM) capabilities to leap forward as a comprehensive robot company spanning the entire ecosystem.

<img alt="The dual-arm AI home robot LG CLOiD raises both hands at CES 2026, the world's largest electronics and information technology (IT) show.
