Reporter Cho Tae-hyung 2026.05.20

The Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) chapter of the Samsung Group Super-Enterprise Labor Union will open its fourth general meeting next week and hold a confidence vote on its chairman. Chairman Choi Seung-ho will be reaffirmed if he wins approval from a majority (50 percent or more) of all members. However, observers note that exerting the same influence as before will be difficult, as the union’s size has fallen to around 56,000 members from a peak of 70,000 due to a mass departure of members in the finished-products (DX) division.

On Wednesday, the Super-Enterprise Union issued a “Notice of the Fourth General Meeting of 2026,” announcing that it would conduct a member vote on items including “the matter of the chairman’s confidence vote” from 2 p.m. on the 24th to 10 a.m. on the 30th. Voting rights will be granted to eligible members who have completed payment of union dues through the Cash Management System (CMS) as of the 21st. The union also decided to extend the voting period if necessary.

In the notice, Choi said, “I previously stated that I would proceed with a chairman confidence vote regardless of the tentative agreement’s outcome, given the disappointment this year’s negotiation results caused members.” He added, “I convey my reaffirmation pledge to prioritize DS division negotiations in next year’s talks.”

He went on to say, “I will form a DS division committee, reinforce the personnel of each business unit and common organization within the DS division, and prepare a negotiation strategy,” adding, “I will gather field opinions by business unit on a regular basis.”

The Samsung Electronics union joint negotiation team, led by the Super-Enterprise Union, reached a tentative wage agreement with management on the 20th of last month. However, internal member discontent spread amid criticism that the compensation package was skewed toward the memory business unit of the DS division. If Samsung Electronics achieves 350 trillion won in operating profit this year, performance-based pay (including excess profit-sharing bonuses) for memory business unit members would amount to about 700 million won per person, while non-memory (System LSI and foundry) members would receive 240 million won and DX division members just 6 million won.

Meanwhile, DX division members raised complaints that the union operates with a focus on the DS division’s memory business unit, leaving the Super-Enterprise Union to join the Donghaeng Union, known as the third union, in large numbers. As a result, the Donghaeng Union is on the verge of securing majority union status in the DX division. As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, the Donghaeng Union had reached 25,389 members and is approaching the roughly 26,000 mark that constitutes a majority of the DX division. The Donghaeng Union has set securing 40,000 members as its second target.

“DX members want the addition of new clauses such as a company-wide funding pool,” an industry official said. “The Donghaeng Union is more likely to accept this proposal than the DS-centered Super-Enterprise Union, so DX members are joining in large numbers.”

[CAPTIONS] After concluding Samsung Electronics wage negotiations at the Gyeonggi Regional Employment and Labor Office in Jangan-gu, Suwon,…

[17
31475,13229,31476,6942,31477,127,632,223,8347
post-55391","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-samsung","tag-choi-seung-ho-confidence-vote","tag-donghaeng-union","tag-ds-division-memory","tag-dx-division","tag-performance-based-pay","tag-samsung","tag-samsung-electronics-union","tag-samsung-group","tag-super-enterprise-union
["GET
