Hanwha Ocean

Shipbuilding stocks rallied across the board during trading. Investor sentiment revived after President Lee Jae-myung met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) summit and expressed his commitment to defense cooperation, adding to expectations for an improving outlook in Korea’s shipbuilding industry.

According to the Korea Exchange, Hanwha Engine surged 12.65 percent from the previous trading day on Tuesday. HD Hyundai Marine Engine and STX Engine also rose 5.00 percent and 5.62 percent, respectively. Among large-cap shipbuilders, Samsung Heavy Industries (3.02 percent), Hanwha Ocean (2.79 percent), and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (1.86 percent) also posted gains.

The market views the G7 summit as having stimulated investor sentiment. In his meeting with Prime Minister Carney, President Lee said, “As the global order is being reshaped, Korea, a defense powerhouse, is ready to actively contribute to strengthening Canada’s security capabilities based on trust.” The industry interprets this as a remark made with Canada’s submarine project in mind. The Canadian submarine project aims to replace four Victoria-class submarines scheduled for retirement in the mid-2030s. The total project is estimated at around 60 trillion won, with Hanwha Ocean competing against German firms for the contract.

Amid recent signs of improvement in the shipbuilding industry, a growing perception in the securities market holds that the prior stock correction was excessive. Choi Kwang-sik, a researcher at Daol Investment & Securities, said, “Regardless of the decline in shipbuilding stocks in May, the shipbuilding industry showed strength,” adding, “The gap between the industry outlook and stock prices has begun to close.”

Newbuilding prices have indeed risen for nine consecutive weeks since the end of April this year. Korean shipbuilders have won orders for 36 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers so far this year, while orders for very large gas carriers (VLGC) and very large ammonia carriers (VLAC) also reached 36 vessels. Expectations also continue for increased tanker orders and additional floating LNG production facility (FLNG) orders for Samsung Heavy Industries. Analysts say that expectations for improved profitability are growing amid a favorable global ordering environment.

Byun Yong-jin, a researcher at iM Securities, said, “Despite tariff and Iran-related risks, the global trade cycle is steadily recovering,” adding, “If Iran risks are resolved in the second half, robust market conditions for ship orders will continue alongside the trade recovery.”

The Korean-type next-generation destroyer (KDDX) model unveiled by Hanwha Ocean.
