Korean minister gets 25-year prison term for role in martial law imposition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">SEOUL, South Korea &#8212; A former South Korean justice minister was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Monday after a court found him guilty of helping ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol carry out his brief declaration of martial law in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Seoul Central District Court said it was clear Park Sung-jae played a key role in Yoon\u2019s attempted power grab following the declaration of martial law on Dec. 3, 2024, including ordering ministry officials to assess detention capacities at correctional facilities to prepare for arrests of politicians. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Park also instructed officials to consider sending prosecutors to Yoon\u2019s martial law command to support possible investigations into the former conservative leader\u2019s political opponents and his unsubstantiated claims about liberal-led <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-yoon-martial-law-conspiracy-theories-youtube-election-fraud-60baa8ab306ceaca6465b90569f079a6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">election fraud.<\/a> Park also ordered immigration authorities to be prepared to impose travel bans, the court said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Yoon\u2019s martial law, which followed a yearslong standoff with liberals controlling the legislature, lasted only about <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coup-yoon-democracy-martial-law-trump-caa2e5c9bbbe59c3af7f3bfab65bdf4b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">six hours<\/a> before lawmakers broke through a blockade of soldiers Yoon dispatched to the National Assembly and <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/news-highlights\/spotlights\/2024\/south-korea-lifts-presidents-martial-law-decree-after-lawmakers-reject-military-rule\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">voted to overturn it,<\/a> forcing Yoon\u2019s Cabinet to lift the measure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Judge Lee Jin-gwan said Park abandoned his responsibility to uphold the constitution and law by taking part in Yoon\u2019s authoritarian push. He described Yoon\u2019s martial law decree as a \u201cself-coup\u201d by an incumbent leader seeking to monopolize power. He said Park\u2019s role would have been critical had Yoon succeeded in suppressing and removing his political opponents and preventing the legislature from demanding the lifting of martial law. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Park had denied the charges, saying he was merely carrying out duties required during a national emergency. Park\u2019s lawyers didn\u2019t immediately say whether they would appeal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Yoon was impeached and suspended from office on Dec. 14, 2024, before being <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-martial-law-yoon-constitutional-court-8cdcf4944c2e3cd9edf723bc29ba51ff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">formally removed by the Constitutional Court<\/a> in April 2025. He was arrested in July 2025, and multiple criminal trials are ongoing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Seoul court earlier sentenced Yoon to life in prison on rebellion charges. In a separate case, Yoon received a 30-year term for allegedly <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-korea-yoon-drones-pyongyang-a33f2207010d64b83a30e97e2f6a8a51\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ordering drone flights over Pyongyang<\/a> in October 2024 to manufacture tensions with North Korea and justify declaring martial law at home.
