U.S. President Donald Trump has extended the “national emergency” declaration regarding the North Korean threat for one year.<\/p>\n

According to the White House and other sources Wednesday, Trump signed a document on June 22 extending the North Korea-related national emergency for one year. “The existence and risk of proliferation of weapons-usable fissile material on the Korean Peninsula and the actions and policies of the Government of North Korea continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States,” Trump said, adding that he would extend the national emergency for one year.<\/p>\n

The United States allows the president to declare a national emergency when a significant threat to national security or other interests is determined to exist. The national emergency regarding North Korea first took effect in June 2008 during the George W. Bush administration and has been extended every year since.<\/p>\n

Initially, North Korea’s nuclear development was the main basis, but the scope was later expanded to include cyberattacks and human rights violations. North Korea’s attack on the Cheonan warship in March 2010 is also included among the grounds for maintaining the national emergency.<\/p>\n

Trump signed the annual extension of the North Korea-related national emergency every year during his first administration and made the same decision last June.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"U.S. President Donald Trump.
