The luxury watchmaker accuses the South Korean electronics manufacturer of allowing digital replicas of its famous timepieces to be downloaded onto Samsung smartwatches.

The massive financial demand follows a 2022 London High Court ruling that found Samsung liable for trademark infringement. The court determined that Samsung permitted third-party developers to distribute downloadable watch faces that virtually duplicated iconic designs from Swatch-owned brands, including high-end luxury labels Omega, Breguet, and Tissot, News.Az reports, citing Reuters.

Court documents highlight side-by-side replicas of Swatch Group designs on Samsung’s platform.

According to recent court filings, Swatch’s $170 million figure is calculated based on what hypothetical license fees would cost across 10 of its core brands. Swatch argues that the staggering sum reflects the “prestige, reputation, and drawing power” of its historic portfolio.

Samsung has pushed back hard against the multi-million dollar demand, labeling Swatch’s financial expectations as “extravagant” and heavily inflated. While the initial trial wrapped up on Friday, a final UK judgment on the exact damages payout is expected to be released at a later date.

The legal battle highlights a fierce battle between old-world luxury and modern wearable tech. As tech giants like Samsung, Apple, and Huawei dominate the smartwatch market, traditional Swiss watchmakers are fighting aggressively to protect their brand equity.

“It would kill the value of the fine Swiss watch: it would no longer be exclusive,” stated Tissot CEO Sylvain Dolla.

The traditional watch industry relies on strict supply controls to maintain artificial scarcity, which supports five-figure price tags and premium brand images. Tissot executives confirmed they have deliberately rejected partnerships with major tech firms because licensing luxury faces for “commodity” smartwatches would permanently destroy their market value.

While Swatch sells basic connectivity features like contactless payment on select models, the conglomerate has strictly refused to build a true smartwatch. The outcome of the London ruling could open the floodgates for Swatch to launch a parallel, high-stakes lawsuit against Samsung inside the United States.

News.Az

       By Aysel Mammadzada

Swiss watchmaking giant Swatch Group is seeking $170 million in damages from Samsung in what is being called…

[17
36921,24189,127,223,36320,36324
post-66919","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-samsung","tag-breguet","tag-omega","tag-samsung","tag-samsung-group","tag-swatch","tag-tissot
["GET
