SK Group Chairman Tae-won Choi said Monday that the group will build a new semiconductor cluster in the southwestern region, including Gwangju, during a “National Briefing on Korea’s Three Mega Projects for a Great Leap Forward” held at the Blue House.<\/p>\n

“We have decided to move up the Yongin cluster plan, which was scheduled for completion in 2045, by 12 years,” Choi said. “We will accelerate investments of about 600 trillion won in Yongin and about 100 trillion won in Cheongju.”<\/p>\n

Choi explained that “memory chip demand will continue to suffer from supply shortages going forward, even if we accelerate the Yongin and Cheongju investments.” He added, “To resolve the memory supply shortage that will continue thereafter, we need to create a new production base.” He went on to say, “We must begin site selection and infrastructure development from now on,” adding, “It took nine years to build the Yongin cluster. It requires large-scale sites, water, and manpower.”<\/p>\n
