The union announced that it will continue with an indefinite work-to-rule protest, refusing overtime and holiday work, after returning to the site on the 6th.

According to Yonhap News on the 5th, the Samsung Bio Sangseng (Coexistence) Branch went on strike on Labor Day, May 1st, and will continue for five days until the 5th.

It is reported that about 2,800 of the 4,000 union members participated in the strike. This figure corresponds to about half of Samsung Biologics’ 5,455 employees. Samsung Biologics projects that if the strike continues until the 5th, the company will incur damages of at least 640 billion KRW.

The strike was conducted by individual union members taking annual leave on weekdays and refusing to work on holidays, without any separate collective action.

The union demanded a 30 million KRW incentive bonus per person, an average wage increase of 14%, the distribution of 20% of operating profits as performance-based bonuses, and the establishment of fair personnel standards. Samsung Biologics proposed a 6.2% wage increase. The labor and management sides held talks on the 4th with mediation from the Central Regional Employment and Labor Office, but only confirmed their differences in position. The company proposed that the union suspend its industrial action and that both sides withdraw mutual lawsuits, but the union did not accept.

A one-on-one meeting between the lead negotiators for both sides will be held on the 6th, and a tripartite meeting including the Ministry of Employment and Labor is scheduled for the 8th.

The union also conducted a partial strike with about 60 members from the 28th to the 30th of last month. During the partial strike, production of some products, including cancer drugs and HIV treatments, was halted. Samsung Biologics estimated the losses at 150 billion KRW.

Copyright ⓒ DongA Science.
