Amid an offensive of low-cost TVs from China, the two South Korean companies are seeking differentiation through personalized, premium strategies, aiming to expand the rapidly growing demand for ‘second TVs’—a trend that surged following the COVID-19 pandemic—to a worldwide audience.

LG Electronics announced on the 1st that its new portable TV, the ‘LG StanbyME 2 Max,’ is officially launching in the United States and Canada. Sales will expand to France, Italy, and Taiwan in August, with a mid-to-long-term plan to introduce the product in 36 countries. Samsung Electronics is also firing back, having launched its own portable TV, the ‘Moving Style,’ unveiled last April, in overseas markets including the U.S. and Taiwan.

The portable TV market was pioneered by LG Electronics with the initial launch of the ‘StanbyME’ in 2021. Unlike traditional TVs fixed in a living room, the combination of a display on a wheeled stand allows users to enjoy content without spatial constraints in bedrooms, kitchens, or even campsites, a feature that has resonated strongly with single-person households and the MZ generation. The product has already reached a stage of popularization in South Korea. According to LG Electronics, previous StanbyME models sold at a rate of one unit every three seconds last year, while sales of Samsung’s Moving Style this year have surged by 110% compared to the same period last year.

Both companies are wielding a ‘bigger screen’ as their core weapon for global expansion. The LG StanbyME 2 Max features a 32-inch touch display, approximately 40% larger than the previous 27-inch model, and boosts the resolution to 4K UHD (3840×2160). It is equipped with a 3rd generation Alpha 8 processor, enabling AI to analyze and enhance video and sound in real-time, and includes ‘Alpha 8 AI Super Upscaling 4K’ technology that sharply restores low-resolution content. Samsung is also targeting demand for super-large screens by dramatically increasing the maximum size of its new model this year from last year’s 55 inches to 85 inches.

Key specifications for the LG StanbyME 2 Max are as follows:

ItemSpecificationScreen Size32-inch Touch DisplayResolution4K UHD (3840×2160)Processor3rd Gen Alpha 8 AI ProcessorBattery Capacity144WhWireless Usage TimeUp to 4 hours 30 minutesVideo & Audio TechDolby Vision, Dolby AtmosKey Content ServicesLG Channels, LG Gallery Plus

Product mobility and ease of use have also evolved significantly. The screen unit can be detached from the stand with a single button and carried like a tablet PC, and it supports both landscape and portrait orientation, allowing free use tailored to content formats from YouTube Shorts to movies. The built-in battery has been strengthened to 144Wh, enabling up to 4 hours and 30 minutes of continuous use without a power connection.

Services to enhance the premium content experience have also been greatly expanded. The LG StanbyME 2 Max comes standard with ‘LG Channels,’ LG’s ad-supported free streaming TV service, and is the first in the StanbyME series to feature the digital art platform ‘LG Gallery Plus.’ Users can display over 5,000 famous paintings from artists like Monet and Van Gogh, transforming an indoor space into a gallery.

Marketability already validated in South Korea provides the basis for global expansion. During a launch live broadcast for the StanbyME 2 Max on LG Electronics’ online brand shop last April, the initial stock of 200 units sold out in just 45 minutes. The number of concurrent viewers exceeded 570,000, proving the high level of interest in portable TVs. The product also received technological recognition by winning an Innovation Award in the Content & Entertainment category at CES 2026, the world’s largest consumer electronics and IT trade show, this past January.

Market research firms forecast that the global portable screen market will sustain double-digit annual average growth. As Chinese companies like TCL and Hisense encroach on the existing LCD TV market with ultra-low-price strategies, Samsung and LG are interpreted to be breaking through head-on by creating a new category of ‘space-customized personal screens’ with their premium portable products.

Lee Chung-hwan, Vice President and Head of LG Electronics’ Display Division, emphasized, “This product was completed by incorporating the voices of customers who want a larger screen, improved picture quality, and enhanced mobility. We will further solidify our leadership in the global portable screen market with the LG StanbyME 2 Max.”

LG Electronics (066570) and Samsung Electronics have officially entered a race to dominate the global market with their…

[25
39531,2524,2710,2713,315,2458,357,314,38502,39530,276,39529,37859
post-72929","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-lg","tag-alpha-8-processor","tag-ces-2026","tag-dolby-atmos","tag-dolby-vision","tag-lg","tag-lg-channels","tag-lg-electronics","tag-lg-group","tag-lg-stanbyme-2-max","tag-portable-tv","tag-samsung-electronics","tag-samsung-moving-style","tag-stanbyme
["GET
