Should the supply deal be finalized, it is expected to serve as a decisive turning point, expanding the company&#8217;s substrate business, which has been centered on smartphones, into the rapidly growing low-earth orbit satellite market.<\/p>\n<p>According to industry sources on the 5th, LG Innotek is in discussions to supply RF-SiP substrates for installation in SpaceX&#8217;s satellite internet service, &#8220;Starlink.&#8221; RF-SiP substrates are key components in communication equipment that transmit data between ground base stations and terminals such as smartphones, vehicles, and ships. They play a crucial role in minimizing signal loss and enabling stable wireless communication over long distances.<\/p>\n<p>LG Innotek already holds the top global market share in the RF-SiP market. The company is reportedly accelerating the development of satellite communication products, leveraging its ultra-precision packaging technology and mass production capabilities accumulated primarily through smartphone components. The company has already secured a delivery track record by supplying communication substrates for the LEO satellite projects of global big tech firms, which appears to have paved the way for the current supply discussions with SpaceX.<\/p>\n<p>If this collaboration materializes, its significance will extend beyond simply expanding the customer base. It could serve as an opportunity to increase the proportion of high-value-added business as the RF-SiP business, previously focused on smartphones, expands into LEO satellite communications and the aerospace sector. RF-SiP components for satellite communications require much higher technical reliability and durability than standard smartphone products, placing them in a higher-margin product category. In particular, communication substrates for LEO satellites are known to be high-value-added products with double-digit operating profit margins.<\/p>\n<p>Industry observers note that SpaceX applies extremely stringent standards to the quality and reliability of satellite components. Therefore, if LG Innotek&#8217;s supply actually proceeds, it could immediately serve as a key reference demonstrating the company&#8217;s technological prowess. There is speculation that this could be the starting signal for LG Innotek to secure a global position in the aerospace communication component supply chain, moving beyond the smartphone-centric RF-SiP market.<\/p>\n<p>The growth potential of the LEO satellite market led by SpaceX is explosive. SpaceX currently operates around 10,000 LEO satellites and received approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) earlier this year to deploy an additional 7,500 next-generation satellites. If the satellite network expands to a scale of up to 15,000 units in the future, demand for RF communication modules and communication substrates installed in each satellite is expected to increase continuously.<\/p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs Research forecasts that the LEO satellite market will grow from $15 billion (approximately 22.9 trillion won) in 2024 to $108 billion (approximately 165.1 trillion won) by 2035. Goldman Sachs analyst Allen Chang analyzed, &#8220;Satellite internet technology will become a mainstream technology, and we expect the ultimate use case will be future 6G communications.&#8221; Goldman Sachs projected that LEO satellite internet subscription fees could drop to as low as $16 per month.<\/p>\n<p>While SpaceX&#8217;s Starlink currently leads the growth of the LEO satellite market, new operators such as Amazon&#8217;s satellite service &#8220;LEO&#8221; are emerging, and China is also expected to aggressively launch LEO satellites. The application fields for LEO satellite communications are rapidly expanding, including direct-to-smartphone satellite communication, autonomous vehicles, defense, and maritime and aviation internet. As demand for data connectivity explodes in the AI era, it is gaining attention as a next-generation communication infrastructure that complements terrestrial networks.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX&#8217;s long-term goal is to build AI data centers in space. The company has even requested approval from authorities to launch 1 million satellites to function as data centers. If LG Innotek&#8217;s supply to SpaceX becomes a reality, there is potential for it to eventually connect to the space AI data center market.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite SpaceX&#8217;s aggressive goals, some analysts suggest that it could take more than a decade for Starlink and space data centers to be fully realized due to technical and financial burdens. SpaceX, which was listed last month, is a giant corporation with an enterprise value reaching $2 trillion (approximately 3,058.3 trillion won), but it continues to record losses and will require massive funding for future AI infrastructure investments. Because of this, even if an actual contract is signed, it is assessed that a significant amount of time will be needed before it translates into meaningful results for LG Innotek&#8217;s financial performance, such as revenue and operating profit.<\/p>\n<p>In the era of AI semiconductors, LG Innotek is actively expanding its advanced semiconductor substrate business, including FC-BGA for servers and FC-CSP for AI memory.
