Yonhap News

Retail investors concentrated their buying last week on single-stock leverage products tied to “Samchunix,” a Korean shorthand combining Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, in the domestic exchange-traded fund (ETF) market.

Between Nov. 29 and Dec. 3, individuals net-bought 770.3 billion won and 385.1 billion won worth of KODEX and TIGER single-stock leverage ETFs on SK hynix, respectively, according to the financial investment industry Saturday. They purchased 432.7 billion won and 216.5 billion won worth of KODEX and TIGER leverage ETFs on Samsung Electronics, estimated at a total of about 650 billion won.

Net buying of these four leverage products totaled 1.8 trillion won. That approached half of the 3.8478 trillion won that individuals net-bought in ETFs last week. Excluding single-stock leverage products, retail net buying was largest in KODEX Leverage (233.4 billion won), followed by KODEX 200 Target Weekly Covered Call (194.3 billion won).

Individuals also net-bought 182.1 billion won of KODEX KOSDAQ 150 Leverage. The move is interpreted as reflecting expectations that the KOSDAQ will rebound, after the index recently plunged and gave back its gains for the year.

As individuals aggressively buy Samchunix leverage ETFs amid high market volatility, financial authorities are pushing to strengthen oversight of single-stock leverage ETFs. Concerns are growing that widening tracking error in Samchunix single-stock leverage products could cause investor losses as their disparity rates spike. Measures under discussion include raising evaluation standards for liquidity providers (LPs) and imposing penalties for disparity-rate incidents.

Meanwhile, investor deposits, funds waiting on the sidelines to enter the stock market, fell below 120 trillion won for the first time in two and a half months. According to the Korea Financial Investment Association, investor deposits stood at 119.9264 trillion won as of Dec. 2. It was the first time deposits fell below 120 trillion won since April 16 this year. That marked a decrease of about 20 trillion won from the record high of 139.6947 trillion won reached on Dec. 4. Some worry that retail investors’ buying power has diminished, but the securities industry tends to interpret it as a temporary phenomenon caused by recent bargain hunting.

SK hynix’s HBM4 image unveiled at “Semiconductor War 2025” last year.
