Hanwha Systems (272210.KS) has launched a 30-ton unmanned surface vessel (USV) developed with its own technology, setting its sights on the global unmanned maritime systems market.<\/p>\n
The company said on the 9th that the 30-ton USV, developed through its own investment, was successfully launched near the Gadeok Bridge in Busan early last month and has begun full-scale sea trials between Busan and Jangmok Port on Geoje Island.<\/p>\n
Hanwha Systems is investing approximately 70 billion won to develop the 30-ton USV and a 140-ton USV capable of combat missions, in line with the Korean Navy’s transition to its future ‘Navy Sea GHOST’ manned-unmanned combined combat system. The newly launched 30-ton vessel will serve as a key testbed for verifying AI-based autonomous navigation technology and open architecture through the end of 2027.<\/p>\n
The USV operates through the organic integration of a combat management system (CMS), an engineering control system (ECS), and autonomous navigation technology. For entry into the global market in particular, securing a software structure that meets the U.S. Navy’s Unmanned Maritime Autonomy Architecture (UMAA) standard is critical. UMAA is a system blueprint that enables unmanned platforms to assess situations and execute missions on their own without human intervention, and it has become an essential standard for interoperability with other weapons systems.<\/p>\n
Hanwha Systems has completed domestic-standard verification based on the autonomous navigation technology applied to ‘Haeryung,’ its reconnaissance USV, and will now begin global-standard compatibility testing to meet the U.S. Navy’s UMAA standard. Going forward, the company plans to secure next-generation autonomous navigation technology that incorporates AI to detect obstacles and targets, identify friend or foe, and perform tracking.<\/p>\n
The company will also focus on high-difficulty verification simulating actual operational environments, including autonomous navigation through narrow channels, safety-assured autonomous navigation in high waves and strong winds, and long-range autonomous navigation spanning hundreds of kilometers.<\/p>\n
Following the launch of the 30-ton USV, Hanwha Systems plans to unveil the 140-ton vessel at the end of this year, accelerating its push to capture the global market. “Through Hanwha Systems’ unmanned surface vessels, which fully internalize global standards, advanced AI autonomous navigation technology, and command-and-control technology, we will expand the territory of Korea’s naval defense technology to the world,” said Yoo Moon-ki, head of the Naval Business Division at Hanwha Systems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hanwha Systems’ 30-ton unmanned surface vessel undergoes sea trials at Jangmok Port in Geoje.
