Samsung Electronics’ new foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, to be unveiled this month, is expected to be priced well above 3 million won in the United States. As “chipflation” \u2014 a surge in memory chip costs \u2014 drives sharp price increases for new smartphones, Samsung Electronics plans to secure product competitiveness through artificial intelligence (AI) performance and the launch of new form factors.<\/p>\n

According to the industry on the 10th, the U.S. price of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will exceed $2,000 (about 3.01 million won) based on its lowest specification of 256GB capacity. Specifically, $2,099 (about 3.16 million won) is the likely figure. Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) is finalizing its pricing plans, including this figure, ahead of the product unveiling in London, U.K., on the 22nd.<\/p>\n

Since the predecessor Galaxy Z Fold 7 is being sold for $1,999 (about 3.01 million won) in the United States, the price increase rate stands at around 5%, which is not large compared to the recent chipflation. According to market research firm Omdia, the share of memory costs in the total cost of premium smartphones priced above $800 grew from 11% in the third quarter of last year to 26% in the first quarter of this year.<\/p>\n

To defend its price competitiveness, Samsung Electronics plans to significantly strengthen new AI features available on foldable phones through an update to “One UI 9.0,” the Android-based Galaxy operating system (OS). A prime example is “Gemini Intelligence,” an Android feature to be installed for the first time in a new product in cooperation with Google. Beyond having AI launch apps on its own in response to user commands, the feature offers multitasking commands that can run multiple necessary apps simultaneously.<\/p>\n

Samsung Electronics will also unveil for the first time the “Galaxy Z Wide Fold” (tentative name), a new form factor product wider horizontally than the Z Fold 8. When unfolded, it supports a wider screen than existing Fold products at a 4:3 ratio. This is expected to enable more efficient multitasking and AI tasks while enhancing immersion in content viewing. Its price is reported to be $1,899 (2.87 million won) based on 256GB.<\/p>\n

Samsung Electronics also plans to equip the “Galaxy Z Flip 8,” which folds vertically, with Qualcomm’s “Snapdragon.” Unlike the predecessor, which was equipped with the in-house developed “Exynos 2500,” the company aims to enhance performance by applying the Snapdragon chip \u2014 considered to have higher performance in the same generation \u2014 in some regions.<\/p>\n
