The memory trade<\/a> has hit a few speed bumps lately, but that didn’t stop investors from flocking to the US debut of SK Hynix<\/a> on Friday. <\/p>\n

The South Korean chip manufacturer began trading on the Nasdaq after the firm raised $26.5 billion in an offering of American depositary receipts that was priced late Thursday at $149 each. The ADRs began trading at $170, spiking 14%. At pricing, the offering was reportedly seven times oversubscribed by institutional investors. <\/p>\n

SK Hynix’s US listing marks the largest foreign stock offering in US history, edging ahead of the $25 billion Alibaba<\/a> raised in its IPO more than a decade ago. <\/p>\n

The company has been one of the market’s biggest beneficiaries of a memory shortage that’s boosted margins and share prices for the handful of companies that make the memory chips<\/a> key to training AI models. Others include US chip maker Micron Technology<\/a> and fellow Korean tech giant, Samsung<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The offering also marks a continuation of the IPO hype that’s gripped Wall Street this year. Forecasters drew parallels to SpaceX’s recent IPO<\/a>, which generated huge excitement among investors and sent the space company soaring in its first few days of trading.<\/p>\n

“Just like the SpaceX IPO we are seeing a similar trend with SK Hynix. We’re seeing here a just very strong and persistent demand for leading companies that are driving AI forward,” Evan Schlossman, a principal at Neostellar Capital Corp, wrote in a note on Friday.<\/p>\n

While SK Hynix shares zoomed higher, some other chip and memory stocks<\/a> were volatile. <\/p>\n
