{"id":82025,"date":"2026-07-10T21:39:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T21:39:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/82025\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T21:39:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T21:39:06","slug":"south-korean-chipmaker-sk-hynix-debuts-on-nasdaq-at-170-a-share","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/82025\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix debuts on Nasdaq at $170 a share"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SK Hynix, the South Korean chipmaker worth $1 trillion, opened Friday at $170 a share on the Nasdaq and quickly rose higher \u2013 signaling investors are still eager for access to the AI trade, even after weeks of<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/23\/business\/tech-chip-stocks-deepen-losses-as-spacex-briefly-dips-below-ipo-price\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> wild swings in tech and chip stocks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As of 2:45 p.m. ET, its American depositary receipts were up nearly 20% to $18.61, after raising $26.5 billion in a blockbuster Wall Street offering \u2013 the largest-ever US share sale by a foreign company.<\/p>\n<p>More than 52 million shares of SK Hynix had traded by noon, \u201ca huge number\u201d less than 30 minutes after its debut, JJ Kinahan, head of retail expansion and alternative investment products at Cboe Global Markets, told the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>SK Hynix executives celebrate the company\u2019s US IPO during the opening bell ceremony at the Nasdaq market. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an incredible story for this company,\u201d he said. \u201cRevenue tripled between 2022 and 2025, but the key question is whether it can continue this incredible pace of growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memory-chip maker \u2013 which is South Korea\u2019s second-most valuable company, trailing only Samsung \u2013 traded under the ticker symbol SKHYV, and will switch to SKHY as of Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Its listing comes a month after<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/12\/business\/spacex-shares-begin-trading-in-biggest-ipo-ever-valuing-company-at-more-than-2-trillion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX debuted<\/a> on the Nasdaq in the largest-ever IPO. Investors are anticipating more massive AI IPOs from OpenAI and Anthropic later this year or in early 2027.<\/p>\n<p>SK Hynix specializes in high bandwidth memory, or HBM, chips that have a higher memory capacity than the typical RAM chips used in cell phones and laptops.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tech giants have gone all-in on artificial intelligence, racing to build out power-hungry data centers. That boom in demand has<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/25\/business\/apple-hikes-macbook-ipad-prices-due-to-memory-chip-shortage-here-are-the-products-getting-hit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> caused shortages and sent costs soaring<\/a>, resulting in blowout profits for manufacturers like SK Hynix, Samsung and Micron.<\/p>\n<p>SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung told Bloomberg Friday that he expects memory-chip shortages to persist beyond 2030, saying customers are signing long-term contracts with the manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>The company \u2013 which sells to some of the biggest names in the industry, like Nvidia and Apple \u2013 has seen its valuation jump more than sevenfold over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>SK Hynix is South Korea\u2019s second-most valuable company, trailing only Samsung. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Tech and chips stocks have suffered choppy trading, however, as American investors grow fearful that massive spending on AI infrastructure could be creating an \u201cAI bubble\u201d similar to the \u201cdot-com bubble\u201d of the early 2000s.<\/p>\n<p>If AI investments do not pay out as expected, the market would suddenly experience an oversupply and prices would nosedive, critics say.<\/p>\n<p>SK Hynix Chairman Tae-won signaled the company is optimistic and doesn\u2019t see any cause for concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe demand is enormous, exponentially, so I don\u2019t really see\u201d signs that demand for HBM chips is shrinking, Chey told CNBC Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The chipmaker traded under the ticker symbol SKHYV, and will switch to SKHY as of Tuesday.
