LG Uplus (032640.KS) is pushing to develop an international standard at the Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) to establish next-generation secure communication quality management technology. ITU-T is an international organization that sets international standards for telecommunication technologies worldwide.

LG Uplus said on the 12th that it attended the ITU-T SG13 meeting recently held in Geneva, Switzerland, where it proposed the development direction for next-generation secure communication quality management technology jointly developed with IoT Communication Tech. ITU-T SG13 is a group that studies future networks and service quality, and tasks adopted there are developed into international standards through consultation among member countries and member companies.

The technology proposed by LG Uplus this time aims to establish criteria for systematically managing service quality in communication environments where next-generation security and encryption technologies such as post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum key distribution (QKD) are applied. It was already adopted as an international standardization task at ITU-T in February this year.

PQC and QKD are core technologies for realizing next-generation secure communication, but applying them to communication networks adds encryption, decryption, and key generation, distribution, and management processes, which can increase latency. For this reason, maintaining quality at the level of existing communication services is considered an important challenge.

Accordingly, LG Uplus proposed latency-related quality management criteria that can maintain the quality of existing communication services even in encrypted communication environments. In particular, for services sensitive to latency, such as voice calls, it presented a target of latency within approximately 0.15 seconds (150 ms), a level at which users do not feel inconvenienced.

It also proposed a method to comprehensively manage transmission latency occurring in communication networks together with latency occurring during encryption processing. Through this, LG Uplus intends to maintain the quality and stability of existing communication services while applying next-generation security technologies.

If the technology is developed into an international standard going forward, global telecom operators, equipment manufacturers, and security companies are expected to use it as a basis to apply next-generation security technologies to their communication networks and manage encrypted service quality more systematically.

“In next-generation secure communication environments, not only security but also the quality that customers experience is important,” said Kim Jong-cheol, head of wired technology at LG Uplus. “Through the development of international standards, we will strengthen our technological competitiveness in the global telecom market.”

LG Uplus employees discuss next-generation secure communication quality management technology.
