Yonhap News

The Samsung Electronics chapter of the National Samsung Electronics Union, the company’s largest labor union, has voiced opposition to the government’s “mega project” to build an 800 trillion won semiconductor cluster in the Jeonnam-Gwangju region, arguing that the union should take part in related decision-making.

In a statement titled “We Ask the Government Once Again Regarding the Mega Project” released on the 13th, the Samsung Electronics super-enterprise union said, “In a survey the union conducted among members over the weekend, 84% responded that they oppose the Honam semiconductor project when considering job relocation, working conditions and treatment.” It added, “We once again request our proposal to create a labor-management-government forum where the government, the company and the union gather in one place (regarding the mega project’s promotion).”

The union argued that if a semiconductor fab is built in the Jeonnam-Gwangju region, existing personnel in the greater Seoul area could be relocated to the region, making union members direct stakeholders in the mega project, and that the union should therefore participate directly in related decision-making. The union stressed, “The policy is being pushed forward without any consideration of the intentions of union members and workers who work in the semiconductor industry,” and, “Semiconductor workers are also workers who should be respected equally.”

The union also announced that it would handle the mega project’s promotion plan as an agenda item in next year’s labor-management negotiations. The union said, “Under the revised Trade Union Act (Yellow Envelope Law) legislated by the government and ruling party, business decisions that affect the working conditions of union members are also subject to bargaining,” adding, “The mega project, which involves the work locations and treatment of tens of thousands of people, must be pursued through dialogue with the union.”

The union also said, “In two meetings between the union and management, the company expressed a negative stance on the project, saying ‘management also feels burdened.'”

Choi Seung-ho, head of the Samsung Electronics chapter of the Samsung Group Super Enterprise Labor Union, speaks to…

[18
45006,7085,37740,127,276,632,23616,7215,45007,7423
post-84282","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-samsung-electronics","tag-jeonnam-gwangju","tag-labor-negotiations","tag-mega-project","tag-samsung","tag-samsung-electronics","tag-samsung-electronics-union","tag-semiconductor-cluster","tag-semiconductor-fab","tag-worker-relocation","tag-yellow-envelope-law
["GET
