The TF plans to benchmark opinions from an external advisory committee and wage operation cases from overseas automakers, then finalize the specific timing and method for implementation during next year’s collective bargaining.

A full monthly salary system pays a fixed amount each month regardless of fluctuations in working hours. Compared to the current structure based on hourly wages plus overtime, night shift, and special duty allowances, it increases the proportion of fixed pay, providing greater wage stability for workers.

The primary driver behind this discussion is the automation and humanoid robot deployment that Hyundai Motor Group is pursuing at its production sites. Boston Dynamics, Hyundai Motor Group’s robotics affiliate, has announced plans to mass-produce the humanoid robot “Atlas” at a scale of 30,000 units annually starting in 2028. Plans are already underway to deploy Atlas in parts assembly processes at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia, USA. The quadruped robot “Spot” is already performing patrol and equipment inspection duties at Hyundai’s Savannah plant in the U.S. and its Singapore facility.

The labor union has consistently requested an increase in the fixed pay proportion, concerned that production workers’ overtime and special duty pay could drop significantly if robots take over nighttime or weekend work. In response, rather than maintaining the current system of calculating wages by multiplying hourly rates by hours worked, management decided to put a full monthly salary system—guaranteeing workers a fixed monthly wage—on the negotiating table. This is interpreted as a strategic decision to ease potential pushback from the shop floor during the automation transition powered by AI and robots, while accelerating the pace of technology adoption.

Hyundai Motor stated cautiously in a release, “The full monthly salary system is a matter that labor and management have agreed to jointly research and discuss,” adding that “whether it will be adopted has not been decided.”

Meanwhile, the natural decline in the number of production workers is also seen as a factor easing the burden on the company. Hyundai Motor’s union membership has fallen by more than 20% over the past four years, and approximately 1,600 to 2,000 workers are expected to retire from the field annually through 2030. This demographic shift in the workforce provides a backdrop that could partially offset the financial burden of expanding the fixed pay component.

Since Hyundai Motor’s labor-management wage model has long served as a guideline for wage negotiations across South Korea’s industrial sector, observers suggest this wage structure reform discussion could send significant ripples throughout the country’s manufacturing industries, including shipbuilding and steel. However, with the full monthly salary system only just entering the research study phase, considerable labor-management friction is expected before actual implementation.

Hyundai Motor (005380) labor and management have agreed to seriously explore transitioning the production worker-centered hourly wage system—maintained…

[21
905,906,35403,6781,295,702,45397,1223,33984,45730
post-86106","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-hyundai-motor","tag-atlas","tag-boston-dynamics","tag-full-monthly-salary-system","tag-hmgma","tag-hyundai","tag-hyundai-motor","tag-hyundai-motor-labor-union","tag-physical-ai","tag-spot","tag-wage-and-collective-bargaining-agreement
["GET
