Having built five energy storage system (ESS) battery hubs in North America, LG Energy Solution has won a string of mega-scale project contracts, demonstrating its supply chain competitiveness in the North American market.

According to the battery industry on the 15th, Google and Cypress Creek Energy, an independent renewable energy power producer, unveiled the “Steel River Energy Center,” a large-scale energy infrastructure project, and announced that LG Energy Solution (373220.KS) batteries would be installed in the project.

The Steel River Energy Center is a solar-linked ESS project that Google is pursuing to respond to steeply rising power demand driven by the expansion of data centers and other factors. Google plans to purchase all of the power generated in the early stage of the project and use it to expand clean energy and strengthen grid stability.

The Steel River Energy Center is targeting operations in 2029. It will initially be sized at 2 GWh, with plans to later expand to 2.9 GWh. Google described the project as “the largest solar and ESS project in its global portfolio.”

As Big Tech investment in AI data centers grows, power consumption is also surging. According to market research firm Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), Google’s power consumption rose 37% last year compared with 2024, while Microsoft’s also increased 24%. In particular, Google, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft accounted for 49% of the renewable energy contracts signed by companies worldwide last year, reflecting their heightened power demand.

LG Energy Solution plans to supply the JF2 DC Link, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based ESS solution produced in North America. The scale of this supply is estimated at around 200 billion won.

By supplying batteries to the Steel River Energy Center, LG Energy Solution has secured an additional mega-scale energy infrastructure project, following the data center project it won from DTE Energy in May this year. LG Energy Solution produces ESS batteries at four North American hubs — Holland in Michigan, L-H Battery Company in Ohio, Ultium Cells in Tennessee, and NextStar in Canada — and its Lansing plant in Michigan is also set to begin ESS battery production within the year.

“With tightening regulations on Chinese supply chains, securing a local supply chain in the U.S. is becoming more important,” an industry official said.

Aerial view of the Steele River Energy Park.
