Men who began balding around age 30 had a 29% lower risk of developing prostate cancer, the study found.

Researchers said the link between hair loss and prostate cancer is not clear, but analyzed that a mutation in the androgen receptor gene may have influenced both conditions.

Male-pattern baldness is known to occur when dihydrotestosterone (DHT), produced from testosterone, blocks hair follicles from absorbing nutrients, causing them to shrink and eventually leading to hair loss. Testosterone is also a hormone that affects the growth of prostate cancer cells.

“Both conditions are related to age, genetics and male hormones,” said Dr. Jonathan Wright, who conducted the study. “Since prostate cancer takes a long time from onset to diagnosis, early baldness may be a more meaningful indicator.”

However, another study published in 2016 found that men aged 25 to 44 with hair loss had a 56% higher risk of dying from prostate cancer.

Meanwhile, the number of young hair loss patients in their 20s and 30s is increasing in Korea. According to data submitted by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service to the office of Rep. Kim Seon-min of the National Assembly’s Health and Welfare Committee, the number of patients treated for alopecia was 250,573 in 2022, 247,382 in 2023, 241,217 in 2024 and 237,009 in 2025, maintaining more than 200,000 annually over the past four years. As of 2025, patients in their 40s were the most numerous at 53,489, followed by those in their 30s (50,712), 50s (46,539) and 20s (35,803).

Clipart Korea Men who begin losing hair before age 30 face a lower risk of developing prostate cancer,…

[3
47498,24547,47494,47499,47500,47496,47495,112,47497
post-90292","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-seoul","tag-androgen-receptor-gene","tag-dht","tag-early-balding","tag-hair-loss-study","tag-korea-alopecia-patients","tag-male-pattern-baldness","tag-prostate-cancer-risk","tag-seoul","tag-testosterone
["GET
