Coupang has issued a formal apology over a fire that broke out at its logistics center in Seoknam-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon.<\/p>\n
On the 18th, Coupang released a statement under the name of Jung Jong-chul, CEO of Coupang Fulfillment Services (CFS), saying, “We sincerely apologize for causing great concern to many people due to this Incheon logistics center fire.” The statement continued, “We deeply appreciate the efforts of the firefighters who are devoting themselves on-site to prevent the flames from spreading further,” and added, “We earnestly pray for the swift recovery of the one firefighter who was injured during the firefighting process.”<\/p>\n
Coupang explained that it immediately reported the fire to 119 upon detecting it, and that all employees who were at the logistics center at the time evacuated safely. Coupang also said, “We will actively support firefighting activities and faithfully cooperate with the investigation by the relevant authorities,” adding, “We also plan to actively provide support for local residents who are experiencing difficulties due to this fire.”<\/p>\n
Earlier that day, around 6:40 a.m., a fire broke out on the sixth floor of Coupang’s No. 32 logistics center, an eight-story above-ground building with a total floor area of 299,000 square meters, located in Seoknam-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon. Fire authorities issued a Level 1 response at 9 a.m., then raised it to a Level 2 response at 12 p.m., three hours later, and issued a national fire mobilization order at 3:15 p.m.<\/p>\n
Under the national fire mobilization order, a total of 21 additional pieces of equipment were deployed from five cities and provinces, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, North Chungcheong, South Chungcheong and Gangwon: four aerial ladder trucks, 13 fire water tank trucks, one unmanned firefighting robot and three recovery support vehicles. As of now, 386 firefighting personnel and 142 pieces of equipment have been deployed on-site to carry out extinguishing operations.<\/p>\n
All 121 employees who were inside the logistics center at the time of the fire evacuated on their own. As of now, there have been no casualties reported among the logistics center employees. However, during the extinguishing operations, one firefighter in his 40s who was suppressing the fire using a ladder truck inhaled smoke and was transported to a hospital, where he is currently receiving hyperbaric oxygen treatment.<\/p>\n
Fire authorities believe the fire, which started on the sixth floor, spread up the building’s exterior wall to the seventh floor. The sixth floor where the fire occurred is a large logistics warehouse with a three-tier shelving structure, and it is reportedly proving difficult to extinguish because a large amount of combustible materials, including household goods, is stored there.<\/p>\n
