Boston Dynamics’ humanoid robot “Atlas” took the stage during halftime of the World Cup round-of-16 match between Brazil and Norway at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on the 5th, drawing the attention of football fans around the world. Atlas won loud cheers by performing a series of celebrations of famous footballers such as Son Heung-min, Harry Kane, and Erling Haaland. It then approached the referee and delivered the match ball, successfully carrying out the “ball delivery” that signaled the start of the second half.<\/p>\n
With the 2026 North and Central American World Cup having come to a close, the technological prowess that Hyundai Motor Group’s Atlas showcased during the tournament is drawing attention. U.S. business magazine Fortune described Atlas’s performance as “something that has never happened in World Cup history,” while U.S. marketing publication Adweek called it “a new global marketing case that combined robot technology and brand vision on a stage watched by fans around the world.”<\/p>\n
Boston Dynamics drew industry interest even before the World Cup began by releasing videos showcasing Atlas’s flexible movements. In the videos, Atlas easily performed basic football moves such as footwork, passing, and shooting, as well as the “rabona kick,” in which the ball is struck by crossing one leg behind the other.<\/p>\n
This move requires both the ability to change direction nimbly and the ability to transfer power at the moment of the kick, making it a skill that is regarded as requiring a high level of balance control. Boston Dynamics succeeded in implementing the technology by collecting footballers’ movements through motion capture and having Atlas learn these scenes through repeated training.<\/p>\n
Boston Dynamics also demonstrated its commercialization capabilities by deploying its quadruped robot dog “Spot” at the World Cup venue. Spot was stationed at the International Football Federation (FIFA) International Broadcast Center, where it patrolled broadcast facilities and supported security operations.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) Group has continued its close cooperation with the International Football Federation (FIFA). Since Hyundai Motor and FIFA formed their first official partnership in 1999, the group has been part of the World Cup for 27 years.
