Yet the catchy beat, unforgettable horse-riding dance, and hilarious music video have once again made history. Nearly 14 years after its release, Psy’s biggest hit has crossed another incredible milestone, showing that some viral moments really can last forever.

According to the Korea Herald, the “Gangnam Style” music video surpassed 6 billion views on YouTube during the afternoon of Friday, July 17. It is now the first K-pop music video in history to reach that number. The achievement came almost exactly 14 years after the video’s original release on July 15, 2012.

A Milestone That Keeps Growing

Psy’s agency, P Nation, celebrated the accomplishment by calling it “a landmark achievement in K-pop history.” In a statement, the agency said, “Surpassing 6 billion views is not only a symbolic milestone in the history of K-pop, but it demonstrates the enduring power of content that continues to be enjoyed across countries and generations.”

While many viral hits fade quickly, “Gangnam Style” has continued to attract viewers year after year. The video reached 5 billion views on December 30, 2023, meaning it picked up its latest billion views in about two years and seven months. That steady pace highlights just how deeply the song has become part of internet culture around the world.

The Song That Changed YouTube

The music video’s playful take on Seoul’s wealthy Gangnam district, paired with Psy’s signature horse-riding dance, originally seemed like a fun internet craze. Instead, it became one of the defining moments of the streaming era.

In December 2012, “Gangnam Style” became the first video in YouTube history to reach 1 billion views. It was also the first K-pop music video to hit that milestone. The song’s seven-week run at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 is widely credited with helping introduce K-pop to a much larger global audience and opening the door for many artists who followed.

With 6 billion views, “Gangnam Style” now ranks as the ninth music video ever to reach the milestone. It joins an exclusive group that includes Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” with 6.74 billion views, Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” with 7.01 billion, and Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” with 9.06 billion.

Psy Is Still Going Strong

The latest achievement happened while Psy was performing at the Gwacheon stop of his Summer Swag 2026 tour. To celebrate, he appeared on stage wearing the same bright blue tuxedo from the original “Gangnam Style” music video, giving fans a nostalgic callback to the song that made him a global star.

Psy also told the crowd he would upload footage from the concert to YouTube as a thank-you for helping the video reach 6 billion views. He later shared a celebratory image on his YouTube channel to mark the occasion.

According to PEOPLE, Psy continues to make music and perform regularly. He remains one of South Korea’s most recognizable entertainers, mentoring new K-pop artists through his label, P Nation, releasing new music, and hosting his annual “Summer Swag” concert series.

More than a decade after people around the world first learned the horse-riding dance, “Gangnam Style” is still proving it has plenty of life left. What started as a viral sensation has grown into one of the biggest success stories in YouTube and K-pop history.

Kayla is the midday host on Detroit’s 105.1 The Bounce.
