Kakao Enterprise has made a decisive move by reshuffling its top management. CEO Lee Won-joo, who had drawn controversy over internal management issues at subsidiary DK Techin (DKT), has ultimately stepped down from his role at Kakao Enterprise as well. Lee Jae-han, the company’s internal head of the cloud business division, has been nominated as the new chief executive.<\/p>\n
According to the IT industry on the 22nd, Kakao Enterprise held a board meeting that morning and nominated Lee Jae-han as its new CEO. The nominee is scheduled to officially take office following an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting and board meeting on August 6.<\/p>\n
In an internal announcement, the company explained the leadership change by stating it has reached a turning point in its eighth year, requiring full-scale growth and a leap forward centered on its cloud business. “Despite various difficulties, we have strengthened our business fundamentals and core capabilities, laying the groundwork for growth,” Kakao Enterprise stated. “We are now at a critical inflection point where we must achieve genuine growth and a leap forward centered on our cloud business, building on our achievements to date.” It added, “We decided on this CEO nomination based on the judgment that the right person is needed to lead the company’s new leap forward.” However, the company did not separately address whether the management issues at DKT directly influenced Lee Won-joo’s departure.<\/p>\n
Lee Won-joo is stepping down approximately one year and four months after being officially appointed as CEO of Kakao Enterprise in March last year. He had previously voluntarily resigned from his position as CEO of DKT due to internal management issues there, and his resignation from Kakao Enterprise now brings an end to his dual leadership role across both companies.<\/p>\n
When Kakao appointed Lee Won-joo as head of Kakao Enterprise, its core vision was to combine technological and business capabilities with DKT. Lee himself had publicly stated he would play a pivotal role in maximizing synergies between the two companies to help Kakao leap forward as an “AI-native company.”<\/p>\n
However, the dual leadership structure was shaken to its core when allegations surfaced that Lee, during his management of DKT, had supported companies with personal ties to him, causing losses to the firm. Investigations are reportedly underway into whether the procedures and terms of the relevant transactions were appropriate, and whether there were any conflicts of interest or breach of duty in the decision-making process. Multiple allegations of misconduct regarding Lee’s management have also been raised internally at Kakao Enterprise. A Kakao Enterprise official responded cautiously, stating, “It is difficult to provide any explanation beyond our official position.” Internally, there was considerable criticism that stepping down from only one affiliate’s CEO position did not constitute responsible management.<\/p>\n
The sluggish financial performance of both companies also weighed heavily on Lee. Last year, DKT posted an operating loss of approximately 17.3 billion won (approximately $11.7 million), while Kakao Enterprise also remained mired in the red with a consolidated operating loss of around 34.2 billion won (approximately $23.1 million). While Kakao Enterprise’s loss narrowed by about 50% year-on-year, it ultimately failed to turn a profit.<\/p>\n
Kakao injected massive funds into Kakao Enterprise last May, participating in a rights offering with a 257 billion won (approximately $173.3 million) investment. However, despite restructuring efforts, the company failed to secure a stable revenue base, fueling criticism that its business normalization results fell short of expectations.<\/p>\n
The nominee tapped as successor, Lee Jae-han, is an internal expert who has successively led the cloud infrastructure and digital transformation (DX) division and the business division at Kakao Enterprise, consistently linking technology strategy to actual business. During his tenure at Kakao, he also has experience overseeing the design and operation of the KakaoTalk infrastructure as the leader of the system engineering organization. This appointment is interpreted as a strategic move to concentrate capabilities on AI and cloud infrastructure businesses and accelerate profitability improvements.<\/p>\n
With the new CEO’s technical expertise and management experience, the company plans to stabilize an organization shaken by labor-management conflict while preemptively capturing industry-wide demand for AI transformation (AX). Kakao Enterprise is strengthening its AI infrastructure business, recently launching a “Hybrid GPUaaS” service where KakaoCloud builds and operates graphics processing units (GPUs) owned by customers. This year, it secured Nvidia B200 GPUs for AI transformation projects for small and medium-sized enterprises in South Korea’s South Jeolla Province and is also cooperating with the National Pension Service on GPU server construction and establishing an AI model validation environment.<\/p>\n
The nominee faces the clear task of moving beyond loss reduction to achieve a full turnaround to profitability. Additionally, mending labor-management relations that deteriorated during wage and collective bargaining processes, and restoring internal trust damaged by repeated restructuring, are also urgent priorities.
