Kakao

Kakao (035720.KQ) shares and those of its group affiliates rose in tandem as the company moved to enter the won-based stablecoin business in earnest. Kakao Group joined hands with global fintech firm Circle Internet Group, pledging cooperation in building digital asset infrastructure, including a won-based stablecoin.

According to the Korea Exchange, as of 3 p.m. on the 23rd, Kakao shares were trading at 37,000 won, up 1,500 won, or 4.23%, from the previous trading day. If the stock closes at this level, it would mark the highest price since the closing price of 40,550 won on the 17th of last month. Beyond Kakao, financial affiliates including Kakao Bank (323410.KS) (2.09%) and Kakao Pay (377300.KS) (4.73%) also posted broad gains.

The rise in Kakao Group shares is seen as stemming from expectations for the won-based stablecoin business. Kakao Group said on the 23rd that it had signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Circle for cooperation in blockchain-based payment infrastructure and digital asset technology. The plan is to combine the know-how in digital platforms and financial services held by Kakao Pay and Kakao Bank with Circle’s blockchain and global payment infrastructure capabilities.

In particular, the two companies agreed to jointly review the business potential of won-based digital assets and tokenized financial services. Kakao Group is also building a won-based stablecoin ecosystem by combining the payment and financial capabilities of Kakao Pay and Kakao Bank, centered on KakaoTalk. Through this, the group envisions establishing an ecosystem foundation that would allow other domestic operators to develop stablecoin-based services.

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire (center), KakaoBank CEO Yun Ho-young (left) and KakaoPay CEO Shin Won-keun pose for a…

[622
49923,49922,2344,827,13247,1043,49924,14289
post-95874","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-kakao","tag-blockchain-payment","tag-circle-internet-group","tag-digital-assets","tag-kakao","tag-kakao-bank","tag-kakao-pay","tag-tokenized-finance","tag-won-stablecoin
["GET
