Revenue grew 30% and operating profit increased 23% compared to the same period last year.

Samsung Biologics disclosed these results on July 23. First-half cumulative figures reached ₩2.58 trillion (approximately $1.7 billion) in revenue and ₩1.17 trillion (approximately $790.6 million) in operating profit, up 28% and 29% year-over-year, respectively. The second-quarter operating margin came in at 44.4%, a 7.5 percentage point increase from 36.9% a year earlier, signaling that operating leverage effects from higher facility utilization rates are now materializing in earnest.

The company attributed the performance gains to full operation of Plants 1 through 4 and favorable exchange rates. Given the nature of the contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) business, contract payments from overseas pharmaceutical clients are denominated in US dollars, meaning a stronger dollar-won exchange rate positively impacts both revenue and operating profit. On July 23, the dollar-yen rate traded near ¥163.09 (approximately $1) in the Tokyo foreign exchange market, while the euro-yen rate climbed to ¥186.13 (approximately $1.14), reflecting broad yen weakness against major currencies.

The second-quarter results partially reflected production preparation and initial ramp-up costs for Plant 5, which began operations in April last year, as well as expenses related to the acquisition of the Rockville, Maryland production facility. Despite these factors, the operating margin remained in the 40% range, demonstrating solid profitability. However, losses from labor union actions — including a partial strike in late April and a full-scale strike in early May — are estimated at approximately ₩150 billion (approximately $101.6 million), with some batch production disruptions occurring.

Samsung Biologics expects to reach the upper end of its annual revenue growth guidance of 15-20% despite these one-time factors, as meaningful revenue contributions from Plant 5 and the Rockville facility are anticipated to ramp up in the second half. Plant 5 is an 180,000-liter antibody drug production facility expected to contribute sequentially to revenue as client products undergo technology transfer and trial production.

Business expansion is also accelerating. Samsung Biologics recently decided to acquire PolyPeptide Group, a Switzerland-based global peptide CDMO, positioning the company to enter the peptide drug market — including glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) obesity and diabetes treatments — in a significant way. Beyond antibody drugs, the company is expanding into new modality areas such as messenger RNA (mRNA) and antibody-drug conjugates (ADC), while also securing land for a third bio-campus to build next-generation production facilities.

Global sales network expansion continues as well. Following the establishment of offices in New Jersey in 2023 and Tokyo in 2025, Samsung Biologics plans to open a European sales office in Amsterdam, Netherlands in the third quarter of this year. A company representative stated, “We will have sales footholds across the three major biopharmaceutical markets — the United States, Europe, and Japan — along with the Asia-Pacific region, which will strengthen our global contract-winning competitiveness.”

Since its founding, cumulative contract wins total 115 for contract manufacturing (CMO) and 176 for contract development (CDO), with cumulative contract value reaching $21.7 billion (approximately ₩32 trillion). Growing demand from global pharmaceutical companies seeking to diversify production networks away from China amid US-China tensions is also creating a favorable environment for Samsung Biologics.

As of the end of the second quarter, Samsung Biologics maintained a stable financial structure with assets of ₩12.65 trillion (approximately $8.6 billion), equity of ₩8.36 trillion (approximately $5.7 billion), and liabilities of ₩4.29 trillion (approximately $2.9 billion), resulting in a debt ratio of 51.3% and a borrowing ratio of 11.5%. The company plans to leverage its production capacity and quality competitiveness to expand from a CMO-focused business into a contract research, development, and manufacturing organization (CRDMO) encompassing contract development and clinical trial support.

A company representative said, “We are sustaining solid performance based on stable plant operations and partnerships with global clients,” adding, “We will work to stabilize Plant 5 and our US production base early while continuously strengthening our contract-winning competitiveness.”

Samsung Biologics (207940) posted second-quarter consolidated revenue of ₩1.32 trillion (approximately $894.7 million) and operating profit of ₩586.4…

[19
49928,22772,49930,49933,49932,21058,49929,49931,48230,16595,127,505
post-95884","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-samsung-biologics","tag-49928","tag-adc","tag-amsterdam-netherlands","tag-contract-development-organization-cdo","tag-contract-manufacturing-organization-cmo","tag-glp-1","tag-incheon-songdo","tag-mrna","tag-polypeptide-group","tag-rockville-maryland","tag-samsung","tag-samsung-biologics
["GET
