Kakao Group’s two B2B pillars, Kakao Enterprise and DK Techin, are undertaking a major overhaul of their artificial intelligence and cloud businesses as they welcome new CEOs. With the conclusion of former CEO Lee Won-ju’s 16-month dual leadership of both companies, each firm is now moving toward fully independent management. Market attention is focused on whether the new leadership can break the chronic loss-making structure and secure genuine growth momentum.<\/p>\n
According to industry sources on the 23rd, Kakao Enterprise held a board meeting the previous day and nominated Lee Jae-han, head of the business division, as its new CEO. Lee is expected to be formally appointed following an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting and board meeting on August 6. DK Techin has also recently appointed Lee Chae-young as its new CEO, establishing a fresh management structure.<\/p>\n
This leadership change is being interpreted as more than just organizational streamlining \u2014 it represents a strategic realignment aimed at putting the AI and cloud businesses on a genuine growth trajectory. Kakao Enterprise provides enterprise AI and cloud platforms, while DK Techin offers system integration, operations, and managed service provider (MSP) capabilities. The two affiliates have pursued a collaborative strategy combining their technical and business capabilities.<\/p>\n
Lee Jae-han is an internal expert who has overseen strategy formulation and commercialization at Kakao Enterprise, serving as head of cloud infrastructure and digital transformation (DX) before becoming business division head. Prior to joining Kakao, he was a systems engineering leader who spearheaded the infrastructure architecture design and operations for South Korea’s dominant messaging platform, KakaoTalk. The company aims to accelerate AI transformation (AX) and strengthen cloud business competitiveness by placing someone who understands both technology and business at the forefront.<\/p>\n
A Kakao Enterprise representative stated, “Building on Lee’s stable leadership, we plan to combine cloud technology expertise with AX leadership capabilities to stay ahead in accelerating AX across all industries.”<\/p>\n
Former CEO Lee Won-ju was appointed as Kakao Enterprise CEO in March last year and concurrently served as DK Techin CEO for approximately 16 months, driving business restructuring and organizational efficiency at both companies. However, he recently stepped down from both positions due to internal management issues at DK Techin. According to Money Today and other media reports, allegations emerged that Lee caused financial harm to the company by favoring businesses with personal connections during his management of DK Techin. The dual leadership structure was subsequently shaken, and investigations are reportedly underway into the appropriateness of the transaction procedures and terms, as well as potential conflicts of interest and breach of duty.<\/p>\n
The most urgent task for the new leadership is unquestionably improving profitability. Kakao Enterprise posted consolidated revenue of 169.7 billion won (approximately $115.6 million) last year, growing 25.9% year-on-year, but recorded an operating loss of 34.3 billion won (approximately $23.4 million), failing to escape the red. However, the operating loss has been steadily narrowing \u2014 from 140.5 billion won (approximately $95.7 million) in 2022, to 127.3 billion won (approximately $86.7 million) in 2023, to 67.3 billion won (approximately $45.9 million) in 2024, and down to 34.3 billion won (approximately $23.4 million) last year.<\/p>\n
The financial structure has also partially improved. Helped by a capital increase of approximately 256.8 billion won (approximately $175.0 million) last year, Kakao Enterprise raised its total equity from negative 171.5 billion won (approximately $116.9 million) at the end of 2024 to 36 billion won (approximately $24.5 million) by the end of last year. However, cumulative losses on a consolidated basis have reached 572 billion won (approximately $389.8 million), making fundamental financial rehabilitation through a turnaround imperative.<\/p>\n
DK Techin’s situation is even more challenging. Revenue last year was 87.3 billion won (approximately $59.5 million), up 16.7% year-on-year, but its operating loss widened to 17.4 billion won (approximately $11.9 million) from 13.5 billion won the previous year. Net loss was 16.5 billion won (approximately $11.2 million), and cumulative losses swelled to 39.2 billion won (approximately $26.7 million).<\/p>\n

Industry observers believe that while the focus through last year was on organizational restructuring and cost efficiency, the key metric for evaluating the new management’s performance from this year onward will be whether they can achieve a genuine turnaround through AI business expansion. Kakao Enterprise has recently been strengthening its AI infrastructure business, launching a ‘Hybrid GPUaaS’ service where Kakao Cloud builds and operates customers’ GPU resources. The company has also secured Nvidia B200 GPUs for AI transformation projects with small and medium-sized enterprises in South Korea’s Honam region, and is collaborating with the National Pension Service on GPU server deployment and creating an AI model validation environment.<\/p>\n
Lee Jae-han now shoulders the heavy responsibility of moving beyond loss reduction to achieve profitability. He must also resolve labor-management conflicts that surfaced during wage and collective bargaining negotiations, and restore internal trust eroded by repeated restructuring. On a positive note, Kakao Enterprise successfully concluded this year’s wage and collective bargaining agreement on the 22nd, the same day as the board meeting, taking a first step toward organizational stabilization.<\/p>\n
The existing synergy strategy between the two companies is expected to be maintained for the time being. A Kakao Enterprise representative said, “The new CEO appointment was just made, so there are no changes to the roles or collaboration direction between the two companies.
