Samsung Biologics disclosed on July 23 that its consolidated second-quarter revenue reached \u20a91.32 trillion (approximately $900.2 million), with operating profit of \u20a9586.4 billion (approximately $399.6 million). Revenue rose 30% and operating profit climbed 23% compared to the same period last year. This marks the first time quarterly revenue has exceeded \u20a91.3 trillion, driven by expanding demand for contract manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n
The company attributed the strong performance to the full operation of Plants 1 through 4 at its Songdo campus in Incheon, South Korea. A favorable exchange rate environment, including the weaker South Korean won, further contributed to achieving double-digit growth rates in both revenue and operating profit.<\/p>\n
Cumulative first-half results also showed robust growth. Revenue for the first six months totaled \u20a92.58 trillion (approximately $1.8 billion), up 28% year-over-year, while operating profit rose 29% to \u20a91.17 trillion (approximately $795.4 million). The first-half operating margin exceeded 45%, maintaining profitability levels characteristic of a super-cycle boom.<\/p>\n
The outlook for the second half remains bright. Samsung Biologics expects to comfortably achieve its annual revenue growth guidance of 15-20%. Plant 5, currently in the ramp-up phase, and the production facility in Rockville, Maryland, are set to begin contributing meaningfully to revenue in the second half. The company anticipates that once these new capacity additions are reflected in earnings, they will provide additional growth momentum beyond the annual target.<\/p>\n
Portfolio expansion is also accelerating. Samsung Biologics recently strengthened its next-generation drug production capabilities by acquiring PolyPeptide Group, a global peptide-focused contract development and manufacturing organization. The acquisition significantly broadens the company’s production portfolio beyond its core antibody drug business into messenger RNA, antibody-drug conjugates, and peptides.<\/p>\n
Industry observers note that Samsung Biologics is further solidifying its position in the global CDMO market by leveraging overwhelming economies of scale in its CMO business while expanding into next-generation therapeutic modalities.
