SUNDAY POLL – If elections were held this Sunday, Luxembourg’s ruling coalition would lose its majority. A new poll for RTL and the Luxemburger Wort shows Prime Minister Luc Frieden’s Christian Social People’s Party has lost so much support that its alliance with the DP, the Democratic party would no longer be possible. A three-party coalition would become essential. The Ilres survey marks a historic low for the CSV, which currently holds 21 of the Chamber’s 60 seats.
POLICE TRIAL – Luxembourg prosecutors are seeking prison sentences of up to six years for four police officers following a 2023 assault at the former Gare police station. Charges include punching a detainee and falsifying incident reports.
BLOOD DRIVE – The Luxembourg Red Cross has issued an urgent appeal as blood reserves plummeted to a critical one-week supply. Recent holidays caused the decline, with upcoming long weekends threatening further shortages. Eligible donors are encouraged to book appointments at www.dondusang.lu or visit the Blood Transfusion Centre to ensure hospital patient safety.

HANTAVIRUS OUTBREAK – Health authorities are racing to find a port for the cruise ship MV Hondius following a suspected hantavirus outbreak off Cape Verde. Three people have died, and two crew members are to be airlifted to the Netherlands for urgent treatment. The WHO suspects the rare Andes virus, possibly involving human-to-human transmission, as the ship heads toward Spain’s Canary Islands. Luxembourg Air Rescue has also been called into action to assist in evacuations.
IRAN WAR – The United States have ended their military operation protecting ships in the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, saying that progress in peace talks with Iran had been made. And that mediator Pakistan and other countries have requested a halt to the mission. The blockade of Iranian ports, however, remains in place. The economic fallout from the Hormuz blockade is top of the agenda today as G7 trade ministers gather in Paris, bringing together the United States, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan.
UKRAINE WAR – A ceasefire on the Ukrainian side of the war in Ukraine is now in effect, President Zelensky has announced. However Ukraine has accused Russia of new strikes just hours after attacks killed at least 28 people in cities across the country. Russia has separately declared a pause in fighting for Friday and Saturday, to mark the anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.

FOOTBALL – Arsenal are on the cusp of history after reaching the Champions League final for the first time in 20 years after beating Atletico Madrid 1-0 last night. . Mikel Arteta’s team beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the second semi-final leg at the Emirates Stadium last night. They will face Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich on May 30. The Luxembourg Football Federation confirmed that tickets for the upcoming match between Luxembourg and Italy sold out in a matter of minutes after going on sale yesterday.
