He was 89.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The palace said he died at the National Hospital in Oslo at 6:35 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Harald was Europe\u2019s oldest monarch. The popular king modernized the royal house but refused to follow in the footsteps of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/denmark-abdication-royalty-margrethe-93ada75d690b788d26d6e74fb9b140a1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other aging monarchs<\/a> who have abdicated in recent times. His son automatically became <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/norway-king-haakon-mette-marit-3827c13443c66df288a541a9804263f0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">King Haakon VIII<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Like other royal houses in Europe, the Norwegian monarchs serve a largely symbolic role, enjoying celebrity status while real power in the democracy of 5.5 million rests with an elected parliament. Harald was crowned after his British-born father, King Olav V, died in January 1991, and reigned during an oil-and-gas-driven economic boom in his country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cA whole nation is in mourning and the people of Norway are left with a deep sense of gratitude for a long life in the service of Norway,\u201d Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re said in a statement. \u201cFor more than three decades as monarch, Harald V demonstrated an unwavering faith in the Norwegian people. He helped us to see the best in ourselves \u2014 and in one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Funeral arrangements were not immediately released.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Royal family fled Norway during World War II<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Harald was born in 1937 in Asker, near Oslo, becoming the first Norwegian prince to be born in the country since King Olav IV in 1370. In the following centuries, Norway didn&#8217;t have a king of its own until Harald&#8217;s grandfather, Haakon VII, was elected king following the 1905 dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Harald was 3 years old when the Nazis occupied Norway at the start of World War II. To avoid capture, his mother fled with him and his sisters, Ragnhild and Astrid, first to Sweden and then by boat to the U.S., while Harald\u2019s father and grandfather went into exile in Britain with Norway\u2019s government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Haakon\u2019s refusal to go along with German demands garnered respect among his people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">During their time in the U.S., the Norwegian royals were often guests at the White House. Harald was 6 when he carried out his first official duty, christening new warplanes at a Norwegian air base in Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The family was reunited in Norway in June 1945, shortly after the end of the war in Europe. Harald attended public schools, the Norwegian military college and Oxford University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Like his father \u2014 an Olympic champion sailor in 1928 \u2014 Harald loved the sea and sailboats. He represented Norway at several Olympics, and in 1987 he skippered his yacht to gold in the World Championships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Harald married his longtime sweetheart<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">As a young man, Harald was urged to find a bride among Europe&#8217;s noblewomen and princesses. For nine years he shunned a series of prospects, holding out until he finally won his father\u2019s permission to marry his longtime sweetheart, Sonja Haraldsen, the daughter of a successful businessman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">King Olav had feared the marriage would weaken Norway\u2019s still-young monarchy. Instead, Norwegians greeted the Aug. 29, 1968, wedding with jubilation, and later embraced Sonja as their queen. The couple had two children, Haakon and his older sister, M\u00e4rtha Louise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The Norwegian Constitution was altered in 1990 to allow the first born, regardless of gender, to take precedence in the line of succession. However, it was not applied retroactively, meaning that Haakon continued to take precedence over his sister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">When Harald assumed the throne on Jan. 21, 1991, he adopted the same motto his father and grandfather had used: \u201cAll for Norway.\u201d He spent the next years trying to modernize the monarchy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt has been my experience that the monarchy stands strong,\u201d he once said. \u201cThis is not least because my father and grandfather did most things right. That puts me under pressure, but I take it as a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Harald won the praise of the country with an emotional speech at a memorial service after a right-wing extremist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/goto?url=CAESXQHrOzAV-tVWmimDrPRlaN3GLGluV1QnAsh5OmS6sXkfs-7XdMlQQO9XZSNFzMNARsd1PqrrGdyBh7fthK-bH7o0H5ZKJUA9Ti120pccLe2fqwiAaK_hM4Vg4jQgAQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anders Behring Breivik<\/a>, killed 77 people in bomb and gun attacks in Norway in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cI remain convinced that the belief in freedom is stronger than fear. I remain convinced in the belief of an open Norwegian democracy and society. I remain convinced in the belief in our ability to live freely and safely in our own country,&#8221; the king said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In 2016, Harald gave <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/c2639f8ff196454c9896b0cb5302084d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an unexpected and impassioned speech<\/a> in support of LGBTQ+ equality, refugees and religious tolerance, saying \u201cNorwegians are girls who love girls, boys who love boys, and girls and boys who love each other.\u201d He added that many Norwegians have emigrated from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Poland and other countries and that they \u201cbelieve in God, Allah, the universe and nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The public speech extolled the diversity of the Scandinavian nation and was viewed on social media by millions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Recent scandals have put royal family under scrutiny<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Scandal and serious allegations have hung over the Norwegian royal family this year. Harald\u2019s daughter-in-law, now-Queen <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/epstein-norway-crown-princess-mettemarit-10a95f4325fad68e181e034e51916f53\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mette-Marit<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/norway-former-prime-minister-investigation-corruption-epstein-c5b3c12815c5d30539bc51a0d971a7eb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faced renewed scrutiny<\/a> over her connections with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. That raised questions over her judgment, though she is not accused of any wrongdoing. Mette-Marit <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/norway-former-prime-minister-investigation-corruption-epstein-c5b3c12815c5d30539bc51a0d971a7eb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">apologized<\/a> for the situation she put <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/norway-crown-princess-son-hoiby-trial-epstein-fca1b5d97b60e4d8e0b8e29db9858e09\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the royal family<\/a> in, part of a broader apology for all those she had \u201cdisappointed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">At around the same time, her eldest son, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/norway-royals-hoiby-crown-princess-son-trial-4233d838715d1d747f94d5addac45d6b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marius Borg H\u00f8iby<\/a>, was convicted of rape in a high-profile trial and sentenced to four years in prison. H\u00f8iby, Mette-Marit&#8217;s son from a previous relationship before she met Haakon, has no royal titles or official duties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-denmark-norway-government-and-politics-a477c36bb41cbe21097f764e7fe8fecc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harald\u2019s daughter Princess M\u00e4rtha Louise<\/a> gave up royal duties after raising eyebrows by saying she could communicate with angels and becoming engaged to an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/norway-princess-martha-louise-wedding-shaman-verret-0db7408cbb24be2620ead00ebb1d6e58\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American man who identifies as a shaman<\/a>. They married two years later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In January 2024, after <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/denmark-queen-king-margrethe-frederik-abdication-22d9356ab4bad4b058b2305fa8730a27\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the abdication<\/a> of Denmark\u2019s Queen Margrethe \u2014 his second cousin \u2014 Harald said that he stood by the oath he made when ascending the throne: \u201cIt lasts for life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">However, he was hospitalized twice on foreign trips after that, including during a 2024 vacation in Malaysia when he was fitted with a pacemaker and during a February 2026 holiday on the Spanish island of Tenerife when he had a skin infection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">___<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Jan M.
