NATO allies called the recent Russian airspace violations in Romania and Poland dangerous and unacceptable— a demonstration of Russia’s increasing risk tolerance. The treaty organization’s North Atlantic Council met on Wednesday morning concerning the incidents in Romania and Poland. All NATO nations have seats on the council, and it is the chief political decision-making body and ultimate authority of the organization.
Russian drones have violated the airspaces of countries that border Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in 2022, but the violations escalated earlier in August when a Russian missile crashed into Poland. The missile landed near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in southeastern Poland, according to Polish military officials. Russia would bend over backward to clear itself of responsibility, the Polish officials said.
What’s Russia’s side of the story? Russian officials did not immediately respond to NATO’s statement. In recent weeks, its foreign affairs office dismissed Romania’s allegations of airspace violations. The missile fell in Poland in late July amid a Russian barrage of Ukraine.
At the NATO meeting, the allies stated that they stood united and resolute in the defense of the Allied territories of Romania and Poland. NATO has continued to strengthen its integrated air and missile defenses across the Alliance, shoring up its eastern flank in readiness to defend against any aggression, according to the organization’s statement. Romanian military officials noted in a Saturday statement that NATO’s defense measures were defensive in nature and carried out in peacetime, but were designed to safeguard the integrity of Allied airspace.
The allies also restated their complete support for Ukraine, adding that they would not be deterred by Russia’s irresponsible acts, as Ukraine’s security contributed to the NATO allies as a group. While not a member of NATO, Ukraine has a long-running relationship with the organization, according to its website.
