NATO was plunged into fresh border chaos last night after a “suspicious flying object” breached Latvian airspace near Vladimir Putin’s frontier, triggering an urgent military scramble. Terrified residents living along the border with Russia and Belarus were ordered to take immediate cover indoors and stay behind “two walls” as the threat level surged. Latvia’s Armed Forces rapidly scrambled an advanced BLAZE interceptor drone to hunt down the mystery aerial intruder around the border towns of Kraslava and Ludza. However, in a bid to avoid sparking an international incident, military chiefs were forced to trigger the drone’s self-destruct protocol mid-mission to stop it crossing into Belarusian or Russian territory.

Issuing a dramatic public warning on X, formerly Twitter, the Latvian military said: “Take action! We inform you that there is a threat in Latvia’s airspace. “Go indoors, follow the two-wall principle! Follow official announcements. If you notice a low-flying or suspicious object, do not approach it.”

The tense standoff lasted for just under an hour before military leaders announced the aerial incursion had officially ended and the device had cleared the area. Officials have not yet confirmed where the suspected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) originated, but the breach comes amid spiralling fears that Moscow is using hybrid warfare to test the West’s collective defence red line under NATO’s Article 5.

The incident marks the latest in a terrifying string of airspace violations along NATO’s eastern frontier, including on October 18, when an unidentified drone blew up after breaching Lithuanian airspace, damaging civilian cars and sending panicked locals fleeing into bomb shelters as NATO jets scrambled. The previous day, two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets engaged and shot down two hostile drones inside NATO airspace.

In June, an errant drone armed with a lethal 5kg warhead crashed in southern Estonia during a cross-border raid.

Western intelligence chiefs have repeatedly warned that Russian electronic warfare jamming is deliberately diverting attacking drones towards NATO territory, bringing Europe dangerously close to direct conflict with the Kremlin.
