{"id":10018,"date":"2026-08-07T23:12:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/10018\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:12:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:12:11","slug":"putin-could-attack-a-nato-member-country-as-soon-as-this-fall-intel-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/10018\/","title":{"rendered":"Putin could attack a NATO member country as soon as this fall, intel says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\" class=\"speakable\">Russian President <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_world_article_main-content_article-body_6_71967\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/world\/personalities\/vladimir-putin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> could attack a NATO member country in the next few years in an attempt to fragment the post-World War II organization and test Article 5, new U.S. intelligence has found, according to a report.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\" class=\"speakable\">While U.S. intelligence had previously assessed that Putin wouldn\u2019t launch an assault on a NATO country while still involved in the war in <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_world_article_main-content_article-body_6_71968\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/world\/conflicts\/ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ukraine<\/a>, the Russian president is now looking for a victory as Ukraine makes gains, and the U.S. and Europe have seen increasing signs that he is testing the organization, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">That includes a drone that hit a Romanian apartment building in May and cruise missiles that landed in <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_world_article_main-content_article-body_6_71969\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/world\/world-regions\/europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Poland<\/a> late last month, a NATO country.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_world_article_main-content_article-body_6_71970\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/russia-preparing-hybrid-attacks-natos-eastern-flank-intelligence-warns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">RUSSIA PREPARING HYBRID ATTACKS ON NATO&#8217;S EASTERN FLANK, INTELLIGENCE WARNS<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/putin-security-council-meeting-moscow.jpg\" alt=\"Vladimir Putin sits at a desk during a Security Council meeting in Moscow.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin holds a Security Council meeting in Moscow on Friday, Aug. 7, 2026. (Alexander Kazakov\/Pool Sputnik Kremlin via AP)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Article 5 of NATO states that an attack on one country is an attack on all countries.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The assessment said it would likely be a limited attack that could range anywhere from <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_world_article_main-content_article-body_6_71971\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/rubio-unveils-visa-restrictions-targeting-cybercrime-networks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a cyberattack<\/a> to a small-scale land incursion and would likely be focused on <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_world_article_main-content_article-body_6_71972\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/world\/world-regions\/the-balkans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the Baltics<\/a> or Poland.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The attack could happen any time between this fall and 2029, the assessment said.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;The question mark is how the United States would respond in that case,&#8221; Heather Conley, senior fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, told the Journal. &#8220;It has always been a goal [of Russia\u2019s] to challenge the credibility of NATO and to separate the United States from its allies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_world_article_main-content_article-body_6_71973\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/two-most-important-american-weapons-systems-nato-eager-have\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT AMERICAN WEAPONS SYSTEMS NATO IS EAGER TO HAVE<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The assessment also comes amid claims the United States\u2019 munitions stockpile has been depleted by arms sent to support Ukraine and due to <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_world_article_main-content_article-body_6_71974\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trumps-60-day-iran-deal-reaches-halfway-mark-ceasefire-collapses-escalating-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the war in Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, however, called those claims false.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/russian-drone-strike-galati-romania.jpg\" alt=\"Police and forensic investigators examine damage at an apartment building struck by a Russian drone.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Police and forensic investigators examine the location of impact after a Russian drone struck an apartment building in Galati, eastern Romania, on May 29, 2026. (AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;We have everything required to strike at the time and place of the President\u2019s choosing,&#8221; Parnell told the Journal. &#8220;Across multiple combatant commands, we have already executed successful operations while maintaining a deep, ready arsenal to defend our people and our interests.
