The country has shifted from relying on European military support in the early years of the war to becoming one the continent&#8217;s most powerful and technologically advanced militaries \u2014 far ahead of Western forces in the mass production of drones, missiles and other key systems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ukraine contributes to transatlantic security,&#8221; said NATO&#8217;s 32 leaders in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/en\/about-us\/official-texts-and-resources\/official-texts\/2026\/07\/08\/the-ankara-summit-declaration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a joint declaration<\/a> at the alliance&#8217;s Ankara summit last month. In recent military exercises where NATO has invited Ukrainian troops to participate, allied forces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/nato-prepares-a-baltic-fortress-to-head-off-putin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have repeatedly been surprised<\/a> by their tactics and drone use.<\/p>\n<p>The comments are also notable given Zaluzhnyi&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/eng\/articles\/2026\/07\/01\/8041832\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">widely rumored<\/a> political ambitions. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/zelenskyy-fires-ukraines-top-general-zaluzhny\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was replaced as Ukraine&#8217;s top commander<\/a> by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most likely, NATO will remain in the same form as it is, and will spend 12 years, like Ukraine, transitioning to the standards that need to be achieved in order to be at least half the level of the Russian Federation,&#8221; said the retired general.<\/p>\n<p>Zaluzhnyi&#8217;s remarks also reflect an enduring Ukrainian frustration with the alliance for stalling its application to join despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/en\/about-us\/official-texts-and-resources\/official-texts\/2023\/07\/11\/vilnius-summit-communique\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">officially floating the prospect of eventual membership<\/a> in 2023.
