Lithuania is to build a new military camp at the Rudninkai training area near the border with Belarus to accommodate German soldiers and other NATO troops, the Defence Ministry in Vilnius said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The camp will have capacity for more than 1,000 soldiers taking part in exercises in the NATO member state.<\/p>\n
Residential and support buildings, along with technical infrastructure and transport links, are to be built across a seven-hectare site at a cost of around \u20ac40 million ($46 million).<\/p>\n
Construction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2028.<\/p>\n
Germany’s armed forces are currently establishing the 45th Armoured Brigade in EU member Lithuania. It is Germany’s first permanent foreign military deployment since World War II.<\/p>\n
The deployment was pledged by the German government in response to the growing threat from Russia, and the brigade was formally activated in April 2025.<\/p>\n
It is expected to be fully operational as a combat unit by next year, with a total strength of 4,800 soldiers and 200 civilian personnel. Around 2,000 members of the brigade are currently stationed in Lithuania.<\/p>\n
Rudninkai will serve as the brigade’s main base.<\/p>\n
The barracks are being built in a forested area that was designated as a Lithuanian military training ground under a special law in May 2022, shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
