Patria and Pratt &amp; Whitney, an RTX business, agreed in February to assemble the first F135 engines in Finland, with production planned to continue at Linnavuori through 2030.<\/p>\n<p>A shift to upkeep<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After 2030, the facility is set to shift toward maintenance, repair, overhaul, and upgrade work. That support would cover Finland&#8217;s F135 engines throughout the F-35 fleet&#8217;s operational lifetime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That transition matters strategically. Finland is using its fighter purchase to build specialized propulsion expertise inside its own defense industry, rather than relying entirely on support performed abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Patria&#8217;s 2024 <a data-ylk=\"slk:framework agreement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/military\/f35-engine-spare-parts-13b-contract\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">framework agreement<\/a> with Pratt &amp; Whitney for F135 maintenance work already extends Linnavuori&#8217;s role well beyond the current assembly phase. The assembly agreement itself is expected to directly employ around 50 people at Patria between 2025 and 2030. Building that expertise domestically, rather than importing it, is central to how Finland is approaching the F-35 program overall.<\/p>\n<p>A larger sustainment network<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Pratt &amp; Whitney says more than 1,300 F135 engines currently support the global F-35 fleet. The company already operates maintenance, repair, overhaul, and upgrade capacity in the United States, Norway, the Netherlands, Japan, and Australia. Pratt &amp; Whitney has said distributed sustainment matters increasingly in contested environments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Finland&#8217;s growing <a data-ylk=\"slk:propulsion capability;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/military\/germanys-first-f-35-engine-installed\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">propulsion capability<\/a> adds another layer of geographic coverage across Northern Europe, though Patria&#8217;s role currently begins with assembly rather than full maintenance operations. Pratt &amp; Whitney Military Engines President Jill Albertelli linked Finland&#8217;s newly assembled engine directly to strengthening that broader global sustainment network. She said the milestone also reinforces the collective defense of Finland and its NATO allies.<\/p>\n<p>Timed to the fleet<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Finland&#8217;s first F-35A fighters are scheduled to arrive at Lapland Air Wing in Rovaniemi this autumn. That timing means the country is developing domestic propulsion expertise before its new fighters begin operating permanently from Finnish territory.
