NATO Military Committee Chairman Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone said in\u00a0an\u00a0interview with Al\u00a0Arabiya that the alliance plans to\u00a0move additional forces to\u00a0its eastern flank. He\u00a0also said NATO members are working through options for the most effective deterrence measures.<\/p>\n
According to\u00a0the admiral, the alliance intends to\u00a0organize and coordinate these efforts under reliable leadership, linking the entire eastern line from the Baltic Sea to\u00a0the Black Sea.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Reuters reported in\u00a0late May that NATO was preparing a\u00a0major reinforcement of\u00a0its eastern defenses through the deployment of\u00a0command structures for a\u00a0new army corps. According to\u00a0the agency\u2019s\u00a0sources, Germany and the Netherlands agreed to\u00a0form a\u00a0joint German-Dutch corps to\u00a0defend the Baltic states. The move is\u00a0expected to\u00a0allow troops to\u00a0be\u00a0rapidly deployed to\u00a0Latvia and Estonia in\u00a0the event of\u00a0a\u00a0possible conflict with Russia.<\/p>\n
Last autumn, NATO General Christopher Donahue also presented a\u00a0broad plan to\u00a0strengthen the alliance\u2019s\u00a0eastern borders. The concept gives a\u00a0central role to\u00a0drones and an\u00a0increase in\u00a0heavy weapons.
