{"id":4569,"date":"2026-06-30T16:18:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T16:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/4569\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T16:18:22","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T16:18:22","slug":"amnesty-urges-turkey-to-lift-protest-ban-as-arrests-rise-before-nato-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/4569\/","title":{"rendered":"Amnesty urges Turkey to lift protest ban as arrests rise before NATO summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Amnesty-International-NATO-Summit-1.jpg\" data-caption=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- alt=\"\" title=\"Amnesty International - NATO Summit\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Amnesty-International-NATO-Summit-1-696x392.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Amnesty-International-NATO-Summit-1-696x392.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Amnesty International - NATO Summit\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amnesty International has called on Turkish authorities to lift a 13-day ban on protests in Ankara and release people it described as arbitrarily detained ahead of the 36th NATO summit, as the number of people jailed pending trial in security operations before the event rose to 178, <a href=\"https:\/\/turkishminute.com\" type=\"link\" id=\"turkishminute.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Turkish Minute<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rights group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2026\/06\/turkiye-authorities-must-lift-blanket-protest-ban-ahead-of-nato-summit-and-release-scores-of-arbitrarily-detained-people\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issued<\/a>\u00a0the call after a province-wide ban on public assembly took effect Sunday in Ankara, where the summit will be held July 7 and 8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ankara Governor\u2019s Office announced on June 22 that all public assemblies would be banned from 12 a.m. on June 28 until 11:59 p.m. on July 10, citing national security and security measures linked to the NATO summit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe blanket ban on all protests in Ankara must be lifted and everyone arbitrarily detained in prison or under house arrest in connection with the NATO summit must be released,\u201d Esther Major, Amnesty International\u2019s deputy director of research for Europe, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major called the ban \u201can excessive and unjustifiable attack\u201d on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said Turkish authorities must protect the right to protest and stop using broad national security concerns to detain people without evidence of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The governor\u2019s office also cited the need to block unauthorized people and vehicles from entering areas designated as sensitive, including the summit venue, hotels where delegations will stay and routes to be used by delegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amnesty\u2019s statement referred to \u201cmore than 100 people\u201d held in pretrial detention, based on the figures available when it was issued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The figure later rose to 178 after more detainees were brought before a court, according to Turkish media and Human Rights Watch.
