{"id":5759,"date":"2026-07-05T14:09:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T14:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/5759\/"},"modified":"2026-07-05T14:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T14:09:08","slug":"why-the-indo-pacific-might-be-on-the-back-burner-at-the-nato-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/5759\/","title":{"rendered":"Why the Indo-Pacific might be on the back burner at the Nato summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Nato\u2019s 32 member states will convene in the Turkish capital this week for an annual summit expected to be dominated by efforts to secure a fragile peace in Ukraine and the Middle East, with Indo-Pacific issues taking a back seat.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts said the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, as well as Washington\u2019s push for European allies to raise defence spending, could diminish discussion about the security alliance\u2019s cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners, despite the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/nato?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nato<\/a> chief\u2019s warnings about China\u2019s ties with Russia.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The July 7-8 gathering in Ankara will be the first hosted by Turkey since the 2004 summit in Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p>The coming summit is expected to test the transatlantic alliance\u2019s unity amid the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/us-israel-war-iran?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">US war on Iran<\/a>, now under ceasefire after the signing of a memorandum of understanding last month.US President <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/us\/diplomacy\/article\/3359228\/which-trump-will-show-nato-summit-odds-are-it-will-be-fuming-one?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Donald Trump has often criticised Nato as a \u201cpaper tiger\u201d<\/a> in recent months, most notably in March after member states refused to support Washington\u2019s war efforts in the Middle East or help reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Weeks later, in May, the Trump administration announced the withdrawal of around 5,000 US troops from Germany.In Ankara, Nato leaders will be under pressure to show progress on the spending target <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/us\/diplomacy\/article\/3315834\/nato-leaders-agree-5-cent-defence-spending-goal-annual-summit?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">agreed to last year<\/a> at The Hague.
