He wants Nato members to increase spending to 5 per cent of GDP. <\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Tokens of support&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-FC2JGIY7QZGPHDJ2G5E7KFU46M\">The war in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/iran\">Iran<\/a> is also likely to loom large over the gathering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-BS25G4Y3ONFBLATXFVH27CUTBM\">Experts say European nations are trying to \u201cturn the page\u201d on Mr Trump&#8217;s criticism and offer him tangible signs of support. He is furious that allies did not do more to back the US-Israeli war against Iran, and accused the alliance of being a \u201cpaper tiger\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-CFYPAW2DQRCSFEUIEL43HSJ5BE\">The US and Iran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/07\/02\/us-and-iran-conclude-hormuz-dominated-indirect-talks-in-doha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/07\/02\/us-and-iran-conclude-hormuz-dominated-indirect-talks-in-doha\/\">concluded another<\/a> round of indirect talks in Doha on Wednesday, with no apparent breakthrough towards a lasting agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-V762EBGSFNHMXNMHVC4PKBSEME\">The talks followed weeks of exchanges of fire and retaliatory strikes stemming from disputes over shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-2X2DSDBHLFD3BA4PKQSQN4PNCU\">Mr Trump has struggled to end the war, which he started alongside Israel on February 28, and to fully reopen the strait. He claimed the US did not need its allies&#8217; help and threatened to withhold US support for Nato.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-KEEJBVWHBBAUVEDPSPBO4VFTWE\">Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte met Mr Trump at the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2026\/06\/24\/nato-chief-rutte-meets-trump-before-crucial-ankara-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2026\/06\/24\/nato-chief-rutte-meets-trump-before-crucial-ankara-summit\/\">last month<\/a> in an effort to ease tension. He praised Mr Trump&#8217;s handling of the Iran war and highlighted increases in European defence spending and investment in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-6KAUNJBPQ5FNVGSLWWX4EKHUAI\">Mr Rutte said between 4,000 and 5,000 American aircraft had operated from US bases across Europe during the conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-MED7RTMFNZH27KFNO3XK6UQ6QU\">Experts have questioned Mr Trump&#8217;s criticism, noting that Portugal, Germany and the UK were critical launch points and command-and-control centres for US operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-EVO37KMJTNAPHOIH4CUUDSCS7I\">\u201cThe US simply couldn&#8217;t have sustained the kind of campaign that it did without access to those bases,\u201d said Daniel Kochis, a senior fellow in the Centre on Europe and Eurasia at the Hudson Institute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-Z5QZ56TR65A5ZJV3KYIRF3S43Y\">\u201cThe Secretary General will likely play up the role that Nato allies played in terms of sustaining the length and lethality of US action against Iran.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-7AOYWZQ3FFFXNN2ZYHZ4TAF67I\">During the summit, member states are expected to offer Mr Trump what experts describe as \u201ctokens of support\u201d, including commitments on mine-sweeping operations, naval escorts in the Strait of Hormuz or funding for reconstruction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-21-2KRBAAA2WNBHVDGUQ42RACT534\">Also in question is whether the US will follow through on threats to withdraw US troops and military assets from Europe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-A4IC56JI4VCNRCJWQH4HHLQUJU\">About 60,000 to 65,000 US troops are permanently stationed in Europe.
