{"id":6066,"date":"2026-07-06T09:47:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T09:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/6066\/"},"modified":"2026-07-06T09:47:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T09:47:11","slug":"keir-starmer-braces-for-rough-nato-summit-as-trump-laments-uks-weak-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/6066\/","title":{"rendered":"Keir Starmer Braces For Rough Nato Summit As Trump Laments UK&#8217;s &#8216;Weak Leaders&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img alt=\"President Donald Trump greets Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer in October, 2025\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"630\" height=\"354\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/nato\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/44eb2e25a27a567cb664a412f9903aa9.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump greets Britain&#8217;s Prime Minister Keir Starmer in October, 2025 via Associated Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Keir Starmer is preparing for a dressing down from Donald Trump at his last Nato summit as prime minister over the government\u2019s underwhelming defence spending plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The PM will fly to Ankara in Turkey a week after unveiling the long-delayed Defence Investment Plan (DIP).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although it contained an extra \u00a315 billion for the armed forces over the next four years, nearly one-third of it is unfunded, while there was no pathway for how the government plans to hit its target of spending 3.5% of national income on defence by 2035.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Starmer insisted that, once security spending is added, Britain will be spending 4.2% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on defence by then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But that would still fall short of Trump\u2019s demand that all Nato allies increase defence-related spending to 5% of GDP by the middle of the next decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s therefore no surprise that, judging by his social media posts, the US president may already sharpening his knives as he prepares to meet the outgoing prime minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:reposted;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;reposted&quot;}\" class=\"link \">reposted<\/a> a tweet on his platform, Truth Social, over the weekend which attacked England\u2019s supposed decline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cJust 100 years ago, England was the greatest empire the world had ever seen,\u201d the post, from an account called Geiger Capital, read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cA few generations later, they are a deindustrialized welfare zone unable to stop third-world men from invading on rubber boats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cDecline happens fast.
