Secretary-General Mark Rutte says the alliance is looking to work with Swedish manufacturer Saab on up to 10 radar jets largely built in Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Rutte told an audience at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, that its current fleet is to be replaced by the GlobalEye system, as it is nearing the end of its lifespan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The GlobalEye system combines Saab technology with Bombardier\u2019s Global 6500 business jet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Micael Johansson, president and CEO of Saab, says the company is confident that GlobalEye is the right choice for the alliance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\">Mark Carney<\/a> announced in May that Ottawa also was looking to buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canada-military-aircraft-sweden-saab\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canada-military-aircraft-sweden-saab\/\">six surveillance aircraft<\/a> from Saab. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-mark-carney-nato-summit-defence-spending-donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump has \u2018won the argument\u2019 on NATO defence spending, Carney says at summit<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Johansson has said the company would establish a Canadian hub to build planes in Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201c(GlobalEye) is a proven system with a demonstrated ability to detect, track and identify complex threats,\u201d Rutte told an audience Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201c(It) is a real success story made in NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Bombardier, in a statement Tuesday, congratulated Saab on being chosen by NATO and said it too is proud to play a \u201ckey role\u201d as governments look to \u201cmodernize their airborne defence capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThis aircraft is proven, versatile and more economical to operate than legacy commercial platforms,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cBombardier stands ready to support with proven aircraft and world-renowned engineering capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Tuesday called the announcement \u201ca moment of great pride.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He added that the twin-engine aircraft would be \u201cmade within the alliance for all the alliance.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Open this photo in gallery:
